Genuinely good movies such as The Dark Knight, The Walking Dead, and The Lion King. Then there are movies and TV shows that are so bad that they are actually good such as Flash Gordon(1980) and in this case High School of the Dead (H.o.t.D). And before you say anything yes I know that there is a letter missing from the acronym. This show is so absurdly stupid that its almost amazing that it was even made. I've watched Japanese shows before but never have I ever seen something so absurdly...well absurd. The facts of this show, the references they make, and even the characters are all utterly outrageous, but then again I'm guessing this show wasn't made for its endearing plot. The story starts out with a typical day in a Japanese high school, or I assume thats what school is like in Japan. The story follows everyman Takashi as he narrowly saves his high school crush Rei, who is the typical straight woman, female protagonist type. They quickly band with an unlikely crew of fellow school kids, Saeko (pronounced Psycho) who is a master of kendo, Saya the annoying know-it-all, Kohta the fat wimpy kid who is surprisingly one of the most likable characters of the entire show, and **** the ditzy school comedic relief. They pick up a few other people but they aren't too important. The characters are all Japanese archetypes and its pretty predictable what is going to happen in each episode. The story follows this band of misfits who struggle day to day to survive the zombie apocalypse etc etc etc. The show also features its fair share of oddly placed up skirt shots and sexual innuendos which I'm guessing happen quite often in Japan and zombie apocalypses. I actually felt somewhat guilty watching this show just because of some of the things that would occur (Episode 5 is not for the faint of heart). Which leads me to the best part about this show and the reason I rated it so highly: The H.o.t.D Drinking game. My friends and I actually watched this show and created a drinking game which will prove quite effective if followed correctly. 1. Drink anytime any of the characters show a bit of up skirt action. 2. Drink any time the show does any odd sexual reference or innuendo, such as someone's breasts defying the laws of physics. 3. Chug your drink any time ****'s breasts make their own sound effect. Follow these three rules and you may have acute alcohol poisoning after one or two episodes. I know this sounds strange that I'm critiquing a TV show based on its associated drinking game, but this is actually the strongest point of the entire show. I recommend at least watching it at least once and playing the drinking game at least once. The game is remarkably effective and it makes the show's more lewd moments more hilarious and strangely bearable. So thank you H.o.t.D. now I kill my liver in a more enjoyable way.… Collapse

It's basically The Walking Dead just in anime form. I really do not get all the criticism about the sexual innuendos or themes. Personally I loved them. The girls are hot! Granted it is absurd just how provocatively they are dressed (particularly Saeko in her apron.) But absurd or not, it's damn hot and even really funny at times. I suppose that was the point. Without the sexual innuendos and scantly clad ladies, the show would be really dark and depressing with little color or life to it. Even with the "distracting" visuals, each of the main characters is given allot of depth and are expanded upon as the series goes along. I'm really looking forward to season 2.… Expand

Well, this certainly isn't hentai and whats even more disappointing there's no good "story". I would be more than satisfied with the amount of erotic content on this if the whole plot wasnt so bland and uninspired. Characters of these show react unnaturaly to the situations theyre in, overall making a really bad impresion. After playing Steins;Gate I was devastated by how dumb HSOTD is. 3 in the score is for awesome graphic.… Expand

I don't consider myself an expert in the matters of what is and isn't good anime, but this show was just obnoxious from beginning to end, and I'm totally ignoring the over-the-top sexual innuendo. That's presented pretty quickly just from the cover art, so if you're not expecting it, you're just dumb. My main problems are with the fact that the situations they find themselves in are pretty ridiculous and the characters are just annoying. I know people praise this show for "deep" characters, but I honestly don't see it. A few sentences about how you were picked on as a kid, miss your parents, or will protect someone no matter what do not make for deep characters.
I would highly suggest avoiding this one. The animation is pretty darn good, I'll give it that, but pretty wrapping on a crap in a box... well you've heard that metaphor before.… Expand

Unfortunately, they completely miss the point with overt amounts of character drama and annoying characters, none of which are likeable. The writers make an attempt at covering up their sad excuse of an anime by dropping plenty of fan service along the way, none of which actually improves the anime unless you are some kind of creep.
Zombie films, movies, books and comics are all well known for their graphic violence and gore. Don't really expect any of these from Highschool of the Dead. Sure, there's plenty of blood, but there's really no actual depiction of violence, expect plenty of cut-aways and blood splatter, but if you expect to actually see graphic violence, you'd be better served going somewhere else.
Someone gets bit on the arm? Their sleeve turns read. Someone commits suicide by jumping off a building? All you'll see is a splash of blood. Someone being eaten alive or torn limb from limb? Splashed blood or a cut away with screaming.
As every episode inched by, I found myself simply more and more annoyed with the cartoon. It's a complete waste of time.… Expand
