100Some of House's callousness is an act, and sometimes the show lets the act go too far. But one of the series' primary strengths is the way the writers and the star keep us guessing as to where that act ends and reality begins.

91It's wonderful stuff, and we all seem to be on a voyage of discovery.
-
80The show pays more attention to relationships we care about, hints at a sensible number of new ones that show some promise, and thus doesn't rely on obscure medical mysteries to carry the whole dramatic burden.
-
80The House-Wilson scenes bristle with edge and anguish. Their interplay builds through the hour to a staggering scene, one of the strongest in the show's history.

The season premiere of Fox's hit series House carries the title "Dying Changes Everything" and, boy, does it ever. Tonight's episode is a must-watch for fans of the show.

75Lucas the PI (Michael Weston) is such a good addition, I really hope he stays....For my money, Lucas' chemistry with House is better than Wilson's--and it's definitely not as weirdly closeted.
-
70The actor's embodiment of seemingly counterintuitive emotions is riveting, as House's placidity demonstrates sorrow, while anger represents a kind of giddy id. Even if House isn't offering new stories or themes, it remains a terrific showcase for a terrific performer.
-
70House is already shopping for a new mate. The situation is comic yet dramatic, as House is almost dangerously distracted from his medical-sleuth work. Some powerful stuff, but many of us are even more impatient for House to reunite his old team (the marginalized Cameron and Chase). The newbies just aren't cutting it.
-
70Lucas' interactions with House are far funnier than any previous pairing of House with a recurring guest star. On the minus side, it's a role so aware of its own quirks that Lucas might wind up being a polarizing figure....As for the returning characters, the mix still isn't right.
-
60House seems a little off when it returns for its fifth season. My diagnosis: A chemistry imbalance.

JamesW.10Even though we're in the 5th Season, the ingredients of humor, drama and suspense are still there.
