Many viewers will find its satire way over the line, but they're not the ones The WB is aiming for. [6 Oct 2000, p.B51]

When Frank Caliendo does his Chris Farley imitation on the WB's new sketch comedy show, Hype, at least it's funny. Caliendo jumps out as the star of the 10-person ensemble behind this wildly uneven quick-cut version of Fox's "Mad TV". [6 Oct 2000, p.55]

Hype! is the high-energy creation of writers Scott King, Lanier Laney and Terry Sweeney. The 10-person cast - standup comics and improv players - seems as fearless as it is talented and includes some brilliant mimics. [6 Oct 2000, p.150]

Like most sketch comedy collections, Hype is sometimes funny, sometimes not, and almost always in questionable taste. [7 Oct 2000, p.C1]

It's not as smart about race as "In Living Color," and it lacks the political edge of " Saturday Night Live" at its best. But Hype might have the stuff to make it in prime time on WB. [7 Oct 2000, p.1E]

But in an age when the icons are often outwitting the impersonators, Hype will have a hard time not living up to its name. [8 Oct 2000, p.7C]

A cast of eager unknowns and prime-time newcomers gleefully skewers pop-culture celebrities from Britney Spears to Regis Philbin with acid, fast-paced irreverence. And sometimes -- but only sometimes -- Hype is laugh-out-loud hilarious. [6 Oct 2000, p.12D]

This show is so atrocious it should earn everyone involved in it a lifetime ban from the TV industry. [8 Oct 2000, p.107]

Hype is the WB's unforgiveable offering of the season, a disgustingly smutty sketch non-comedy show. [7 Oct 2000]
