Alice Chenery and her friends, Cleo and Milly, return still seeking love. Unfortunately, Alice has not reached her quota of frogs and various reptiles before fate gifts her with a soulmate. A combined production of BBC Drama and BBC Comedy from the pen of David Renwick (One Foot in the Grave, The Two Ronnies and Jonathan Creek), Love Soup is a bittersweet look at single life and its bizarre twists.
Series One: Gil Raymond and Alice Chenery would appear to be perfect soulmates. Gil is a successful American comedy writer who has fled his home country in search of artistic integrity and a lasting relationship. Alice is an account manager for a perfume company in a London department store, who is struggling to maintain a flat in Brighton she cannot afford. Week by week, Love Soup explores the separate lives of Gil and Alice: lives which, unhappily, never intersect, but parallel each other in many subtle ways. The series observes their hopes and fears as they try to remain sane in a world in which they feel increasingly excluded. Telling and poignant, each week brings their continuing doomed attempts to find the definitive partner who will bring them the happiness they deserve.
The programme was originally transmitted on Tuesdays at or around 9:00 p.m. on BBC1, and the program length was one hour.
