  1. I rather enjoyed the pilot. Perhaps it's a Canadian thing, but like "Flashpoint," Rookie Blue doesn't oversell itself. It is modest and plain in a way that makes even its less likely moments feel credible enough.
  2. The insipid pop music that cues emotional moments is annoying, but the writing isn't. And the characters are more interesting than their headshots would suggest.

It's summer, expectations are low, and you could do a lot worse than this genial, softhearted import.
  4. Rookie Blue is set in a nondescript big city, which also serves to make the series generic. The cast, however, is spunky and promising.

Rookie Blue makes every rookie mistake there is. And the main message going out to the public about new police recruits? "They're so cute!"

The pilot goes down smoothly enough, but lacking a single novel beat and with no one but Peregrym registering, there's simply no compelling reason to make another visit to this precinct

Despite occasional moments of solid acting on the part of Peregrym and Okuma, Rookie Blue sinks under the weight of its cheesy montages, references to the rookies as "fresh paint," and the lack of chemistry between the main characters.
  8. Rookie Blue is "Grey's Anatomy" in a police station. And that's about as remarkable as this fairly generic Canadian co-production gets.
  9. 40
There's absolutely no texture in the world of Rookie Blue, no effort to make it seem like anything more than a routine hour of TV.
  10. 40
Rookie Blue hauls out pretty much every cop-show cliche in the book. As a matter of fact, it looks like it was stitched together from pieces of old TV shows.
  11. At its core, Rookie is a terrible show.

It works extremely hard to be as realistic as possible, and it does a pretty great job. The characters are not all crazy gifted, and they make their fair share of mistakes, making them extremely believable as people. The angle on this show is basically if you like seeing some justice and also like shows that capture real emotions, and focus on the characters more; then you will like this. All the actors are extremely talented and interact with each other like you would with colleagues at work, another very humanizing factor in the show. Great, if your into this stuff. Full Review »
