Surprisingly middlebrow, "The American Mall" doesn't have the zing you'd expect of an MTV musical....But there are some nice songs and reasonably good chemistry between the leads, while a gentle and kindhearted glow prevails.
The New York TimesSusan Stewart
Slightly less sophisticated than the midmarket shopping mall that is its setting, American Mall is to “High School Musical” as “The Little Mermaid” is to “The Mickey Mouse Club”: older, wiser, marginally sexier--and pretty wonderful.

While the screenplay is simple and shallow, it has also been mounted with some craft and wit--the film isn't dull, at any rate, and it's never too insulting to one's intelligence.

The soundtrack, despite some appalling numbers ("At the mall-all-allll!"), has several potential hits.

Mall's message - talent good, cynical corporate packaging bad? - can't help but be a mixed one.

Mall is better than Disney's recent, lackluster "Camp Rock," but the choreography and out-of-step dancing too often disappoint....American Mall also overstays its welcome. It's overstuffed with songs, proving that more doesn't necessarily make a show better.

There is artistry in Mall, but its aroma is often overwhelmed by the smell of commerce.

The dumbing down of America continues, and is being targeted younger and younger.
Jessica L. gave it a10:
I loved this movie I even bought the soundtrack. It's better than high school musical.
