This elegant, shaggy dog of a 19th-century western takes us on a painfully human journey across the old West.

If it weren't for the commercials and basic-cable cutaways from some violence, you'd swear you were watching a classic Western. [23 Jun 2006, p.66]

This four-hour gem is exquisite from start to finish, rife with the texture of its place and time, rich with human understanding expressed in everyday articulation and small gestures.

It's a little movie that feels big, without being self-consciously cinematic.

"Broken Trail" is a Western in the old-fashioned vein - one that keeps the action moving, but along an even, and sometimes verrry slow trail.

A richly entertaining winner, a saga that both stirs the emotions and whips up vivid outbursts of satisfying, varmint-vanquishing action.

These joined stories never forge into one strong plot, but there's always Duvall. [3 Jul 2006, p.35]

While "Broken Trail" is plot driven and not without action, it is most of all a languid elegy about the olden days on the Western ranges.

"Broken Trail" is not as well written or compelling as "Lonesome Dove," but Mr. Duvall brings an earthy believability to even the most plodding lines.

scott s gave it an8:
great movie - some unusual components not usually seen in a western. "Gus" rides again !!!!!! Broken Trail is a nice compliment to Lonesome Dove - cwetainly not quite in the same league - but one of the great western movies that i have seen. Sorry guys - Open Range is a decent movie, but not even in the same conversation with Lonesome Dove - the #1 Western of all time !!!!!!!!

Keith A gave it a10:
Not since Lonsom Dove Has there been a great epic western. I think Robert Duvall is one of America's great treasures.

Marcy W gave it a10:
I applaud Broken Trail. Thank you AMC a million times over for producing and airing a program that was "wholesome" and well done. A great cowboy movie, with characters reflecting strong character. My husband and I loved it and recommend it to all of our friends

Gizelle D gave it a10:
