Moving the story ahead five years didn't so much reinvent the show as it recharged and refreshed the scintillating mix of domestic comedy and sudsy intrigue that we've always enjoyed.

It has the wit and bite that made the series a standout, but it has jettisoned much of the dramatic baggage that had begun to weigh the show down.

Yet while the first episode basically does the heavy lifting setup-wise, the second is a knockout -- with great scenes involving Lynette's well-intentioned but intrusive parenting style, Gabrielle's social climbing and Bree's work/home juggling act.

This season, the Housewives aren't desperate: They're avidly ambitious, like the series itself.

So far, at least, this season promises to be less about plot than personality. That doesn't mean the show is perfect - it never was--but it's better, and that's a big relief.

As creator Marc Cherry explained this summer, he wanted to re-set the series and get the stories back to something more closely resembling reality. Sunday's season premiere does that pretty well with some of the women's stories, especially Lynette (Felicty Huffman), whose twins are now terrible teens.

If you gave up on either one because they seemed tired or just annoying in their familiarity, now might be a good time to try a return visit.

The nostalgic feel Wisteria Lane once held has evaporated, ironically leaving fans nostalgic for the way things once were.

Season 5 is as good as the first 4 have been. Interesting plots and twists. Good fun.

While I find that I can't stop watching because I have seen every single episode, I think some of the episodes in this season are a bit of a let down and there is quite a bit of filler. I think the season's story overall is a good one, but there just simply isn't enough material there to fill every episode of the entire season. Remember the weird episode about the death of the handyman? WTF?
Dudlei de O gave it a10:
"Desperate Housewives is a modern masterpiece of art. It brings the saddest dramatic situations with the most sarcastic scenes of humour within a misterious thriller plot. From a literary point of view, the characters' construction is one of the most important elements in the plot, giving the public a good sense of reality concerning the character's behaviour.
Allan gave it a9:
This season is great so far, especially after the terrible fourth season. DH is strange, since it seems to be good every odd year.. Seasons 1 and 3 are the strongest and 5 is great, while 2 and 4 weren't too hot, in my opinion. I'm glad it's back to the level of quality it used to be.
