Entertainment WeeklyKen Tucker

This original-story TV movie is both a crime tale (Stone searches for long-lost kidnapped child) and, more satisfyingly, a portrait of a hard-boiled hero gone soft around the edges.

Like good police work, good storytelling requires time and a eye for detail; Jesse Stone: Thin Ice has both.

Selleck so thoroughly embodies Jesse's flinty yet wisecracking personality that Thin Ice feels like something Parker might have written, even though he didn't.

Thin Ice has a fair number of references to the earlier films, and newcomers will occasionally feel left out. But the story remains clear, nonetheless, and the final moments are delicately understated in a way seen too seldom in made-for-TV movies.

We've taken most of this ride before. Selleck and company make it a pleasure to take it again.

The crimes merely set the stage for a moody, atmospheric film that's more interested in its characters than in the mechanics of its mystery. In the end, this is a movie about adults, for adults.

Sure, the plot goes every which way, but with Selleck as its foundation, the Stone series remains rock solid.

Jesse Stone, while much more brooding, is a pleasant tonic of a similar sort.

Anita D gave it a2:
I read the Jesse Stone novels; Tom Sellick is too old. This story was too confusing with leaps in the plot that made me think some of the show had been editesd out. Finally, the story took place in 2007; why show it in 2009; was it on the shelf for that long?

Clive W gave it a6:
Enjoyable, but, like most copies, the dialog missed the sharp repartee of a Parker original. While Tom Selleck was able to carry the Jesse Stone character authentically, the other characters were pale imitations of their Parker selves.

Terry M gave it a0:
Way to much smoking! As an ex-smoker I was sickened by the scene with William Devane as unrealistic that any professional in this day and age would subject a client to this stench. In the next scene befor the city council the first thing you see is one of the councilman lighting up. Tell Tom Selleck, as producer, it is unlawful to smoke in public buildings. Smoking in films adds nothing to the story line and turns off many veiwers however I just turned off this film at the begining of this second scene.
