Summary
Starring Garry Shandling, Jeffrey Tambor, Rip Torn, Wallace Langham, Penny Johnson, Janeane Garofalo, Scott Thompson, and Mary Lynn Rajskub
While it's looking increasingly likely that the 89-episode run of one of television's all-time funniest series will never be released on DVD in its entirety, this 23-episode set (which includes shows spanning from 1992 to 1998) makes up for its lack of quantity with quality, featuring an impressive array of extras including hours of newly-shot footage of candid moments with star Garry Shandling and a number of his "Larry Sanders" guests and co-stars.

The interviews take the slightly unnerving emotional tenor of the show and move it several stages further down the road. Unscripted and lightly edited, they feel like outtakes from a John Cassavetes movie.

[Shandling's new footage is] creepy. And captivating. Uncomfortably raw. And addictively fascinating. Oh, are there episodes on these four discs, too? Yes, those. They're still marvelous, maybe more so now.

This show really stands the test of time, thanks to the amazing guest stars, terrific central characters, and the extremely clever, funny writing.... [And] this quite simply ranks as some of the best and most interesting array of extras ever seen on a TV show collection.

This wasn't just a landmark series, though it certainly was that... it's also some of the very best and funniest television ever produced.

Revisiting former colleagues and friends to find out how they felt about both Larry Sanders and Garry Shandling amounts to a monumental display of self-centeredness — and a great deal of fearless revelation and humor.

The shorter version [of the series] gives you the whole shape of "Larry Sanders" — you can take it all in, even with the extras, in a relatively manageable time — and gives the proper context to Shandling's special additions.

This DVD set is so much more than a compilation. It's a new work in itself.

There's an extra eight hours of incredible new material.

Amazingly good - even on third or fourth viewings. For pace and ascerbic wit, there's nothing like it.
Timothy D. gave it an8:
I would have given this a 10 if it weren't for the decision to release just the 23 episodes in this set instead of the entire series. This program is an absolute classic, with great writing and superb acting, and we deserve to have *all of it* available -- I sinderely hope they will be forthcoming at some point. The extras in this set, btw, complement the episodes beautifully.
greg m gave it a10:
Raw and insightful, not only to the personalities and process, but also to the explortation where truth and creativity intersect. "Bonus Material" is an understatement.
John gave it a10:
This really is a perfect show. I ripped all these to my video ipod for a vacation and watched them all on the plane (there and back). Last night I watched the extras on this dvd until 7am. They are that good. This is absolutely a must buy dvd set. Along with Wonder Years and the Office, Larry Sanders is the best tv has ever had to offer.
mike r gave it a10:
brilliant and prescient
Lee M gave it a10:
Hey now! Second only to Curb Your Enthusiasm in the 'greatest ever comedy shows' running. Absolutely outstandingly funny, with surely the best casting (and most consistently brilliant performances) this side of Seinfeld. Unmissable.
