Summary
Starring Adam Baldwin, Rutger Hauer, Steve Guttenberg, Bryan Brown, C. Thomas Howell, and Alex Kingston
This remake of the 1972 disaster-at-sea movie (definitely not to be confused with Wolfgang Petersen's theatrical remake arriving in 2006) finds a cruise ship overturned by terrorists, rather than a tidal wave.

New York Daily NewsDavid Hinckley
In the end, "The Poseidon Adventure" has the same appeal on TV as it had in theaters. It's a campfire yarn, a B-movie without pretensions, and it delivers what it promises.

Pretty pointless. [25 Nov 2005, p.91]
Detroit Free PressMike Duffy
But though it gets off to a fairly brisk start, building to an early jolt of digital special effects razzle-dazzle when the cruise liner rolls over, "The Poseidon Adventure" soon flounders in a sea of cardboard characters and sluggish storytelling.

It is not quite as deliciously awful as the original 1972 disaster movie, but it comes pretty close.

As in the original, ingenuity matters more than acting, plus there are grenades and fins.

This low-star-wattage not-so-extravaganza is tedious whether you've seen the original or not.

Though the performances are uniformly flat... you can still find fleeting moments of popcorn fun.

NBC's "Poseidon Adventure" is notably less terrible than CBS's recent crop of disaster flicks, but as written by Bryce Zabel ("Dark Skies"), it's still nothing to brag about.

Instead of being mindless but engrossing, as [film critic Leonard] Maltin called the original, it's just mindless.

The film goes from cheesy to offensive when a Homeland Security agent onboard warily eyes the "international" waitstaff. [28 Nov 2005, p.55]

[The] movie is a real slog before its tipping point and only barely watchable thereafter.

It's terrible, terrible, terrible. It's even worse than it sounds.

Sometimes, a critic just wants to write, ''Don't watch it." Or, ''NBC, you should be ashamed of yourself." And leave it at that.

It's almost impossible to know where to begin with what goes wrong with this overblown "epic": the lousy acting by a straight-to-video cast, the turgid pacing, the laughable dialogue or the attempt to "update" the film by tossing in a ludicrous terrorist plot.

This edition of The Poseidon Adventure lacks not only wit, but any point at all.

MIKE C gave it an8:
Really a very decent remake with appropriate updates but little logic in the dynamics of the ship turning over from a bomb.Weak cast does fine as do the effects. The ship is ugly the pace good.
Ernie H gave it a2:
Soap opera acting, bad dialogue and cheesy effects make this disaster flick a catastrophe unto itself. Quite literaly - unwatchable. Your intelligence will be insulted - if you have any.
Carissa L gave it a0:
I can't believe how bad this was.
Tom R gave it a0:
This is utter crap!
Bob N gave it a5:
I thought the movie being updated for "modern times" was great. What I found unappealing was the fact that at every danger point the movie stopped while each character had to have a heartfelt moment with a loved one or some sense of hesitation to overcome their own fear about the next obstacle to cross. A good example was the upside down catwalk that was only about 15 feet long but took 11 people 10 minutes to cross and claimed the lives of 2 of the passengers. If I were on a sinking ship I believe I would be moving a lot faster.

I love this movie . The original was the best but, it needed to be updated for todays generation of people. I was 50 years old when i saw the original movie in 1972 . I remember how everyone was so amazed by the special effects of title wave turning over the ship. I think that movie showed originality in its highest form. now that I am 83 years old , and i just saw the remake and it makes me feel good that hollywood is still doing its job to keep people entertained. good job people!!!!!!!
