Entertainment WeeklyTanner Stransky
Starring as the all-too-righteous mother who is moved to become a gay advocate after shunning her son to a tragic end, Sigourney Weaver unleashes a raw, Emmy-worthy performance.

Exceptional performances abound in this poignant Lifetime original about a mother who realizes too late that unconditional love for her gay son is far more important than her faith in a homophobic, vindictive and judgmental God.

Beautifully adapted by writer Katie Ford from Leroy Aarons' book, the movie takes dialogue that has doubtless been expressed from children to parents countless times before--"Why would I choose this?" an exasperated Bobby pleads to his mother--and sharpens its edges to unleash the heartbreak within. That's largely due to the fine performances, which zero in on the characters' shared suffering, frustration and confusion.

Prayers for Bobby is not a great movie, but it is a worthwhile one with a purpose beyond mere entertainment. It should be required viewing for any parent who considers disowning his or her gay child.

It's filled with obvious dichotomies...You know, it's a Lifetime movie. Still, there's no denying the story's impact, as it echoes more than 25 years after Bobby's death.

Awkward dialogue and merely adequate direction notwithstanding, Bobby becomes a universal story of a child trying to please a parent, and of a parent who learns too late that children will, after all, listen.

The problem here lies with wrapping that message inside a movie that has so little nuance it plays like a public service announcement.

I watch this film and, I broke down in tears. I am in the current situation as Bobby was and it hurt me to my heart that your parents would act in such a manner. As I finished watching this movie I went to my parents and to them they have to accept me for who I am or else. It was such a relief. This is a wonderful movie and will watch it over and over again.

Ryan C. gave it a10:
The movie's not perfect, but neither is life -- and that's what this movie is about. Solid performances overall and a very sad story. Weaver and Kelley really make it come alive.
Cal gave it a10:

As a movie, it was ok. But the acting from Sigourney Weaver was just stupendous and award-worthy. So emotional. So sad. But good.
