Chicago Sun-TimesDoug Elfman

It's a lot of fun. It's funny. And stars Bret Harrison and Tyler Labine have better chemistry than most duos on TV.

The writing and acting are hit out of the ballpark on this one, and that's not a vibe you pick up out of nowhere.

Wise steals this, show, and his costars aren't easy prey. What's more, the dynamic is quite clever. [28 Sep 2007, p.94]

The CW's Reaper and NBC's "Chuck," the two shows featuring the aforementioned Sam and, um, Chuck, are an unusual pairing in that they're not only both good--with ABC's "Pushing Daisies," they're the best new shows of the season.

Wise has been given a great chance to shine, and he makes the most of it, stealing scenes with such aplomb it may almost be a sin. Still, the show has to be carried by Harrison and Labine, and they seem up to the task.

Kevin Smith directs the pilot episode with his typically expert comic timing. But he also handles the dark action bits nicely. Because even though Reaper is generous with its humor, it’s not entirely wink-wink.

Reaper is right up there with the best new shows of the season, better, actually, than NBC's "Chuck" because it dares to be more radical.

Tyler Labine makes a most excellent wacky bearded sidekick, and Rick Gonzalez and Valarie Rae Miller round out the Scooby Gang. Auteur of slackerdom Kevin Smith ("Clerks") directed the pilot, which maintains a nice fairy tale tone even as it stresses the banality of the infernal.

Geek TV is really the stories of people who've had greatness, not geekiness, thrust upon them, mostly in the form of unrequested superpowers. It should probably disturb me, but somehow doesn't, that the best of these, the CW's Reaper.

All the details have color, and so do the characters, right down to Sam's guilt-ridden parents, with whom he still lives. And there are fleeting hints of drama in the scenario that will surely gain momentum and weight.

In pulling these tried-and-true elements together, Smith and series creators Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters also garnish Reaper with several deft little touches--like pegging the Dept. of Motor Vehicles as a hiding-in-plain-sight portal to Hell, or the appropriate strains of Blue Oyster Cult's 'Don't Fear the Reaper.'

Stacey E gave it a10:
I love this show. I have to watch it every week, and if I'm not home I record it. Please keep this show on the air!!

Sean D gave it a10:
One of the best shows on TV. DON'T CANCEL IT !!

Kevin O gave it a10:
Hysterical, inventive and involving. The best commedy introduced in 2007 and while modern, it hearkens back to television's Golden Age.

Dave G gave it a10:
Pure genius. Its like one big spin-off from Clerks, but with a better 'premise'. Ray Wise is just a scream as the Devil, and the rest of the cast are all so likeable. I appreciate the Chicago Tribune reviewers link to Joss Whedon, because this has become my favorite TV show since Firefly. I sincerely hope it doesn't suffer the same fate. The only disappointment with Reaper is that its not every week we get to hear Gladys say 'Place the vessel on the mat' - makes me LOL every time I hear her say that

Andrew B gave it a10:
Best show on television, its shows like this and the former arrested development that make me think there is a glimmer of hope in the garbage heap that is television. I dont know if its because i relate to the early 20-something male with no life plan or what but I'm hooked.

Robert P gave it a10:
This is the best new show on tv hands down. it is sad it is on a network who cares more about 18-34 year old women then quality program, if it was on any other network, it would be one of the most watched shows on TV.

Ann M gave it a10:
Reaper is probably the first show I have found (that includes the supernatural) that can be watched by anyone. It's such an easy-going, hilarious, gripping show that you could watch it a hundred times over and still laugh and smile. This show should definately be kept on air, I don't know what my Wednesdays would be like without it! (thank God E4 brought it to the UK!) Keep up the good work guys, Ray Wise is terrific, Bret Harrison keeps the likeability factor and Tyler Labine is simply hilarious. A terrific show. I would recommend it to anyone.
