The teen-soap element of the show is just as compelling as the season-long murder mystery. [14 Oct 2005, p.131]

Unfortunately, the show deserves a much better DVD set.... For now, we’ll have to settle for one of the best shows from last few years in widescreen, and hope that Warner does better with season two. [#11; score listed is for series; DVD score is 50/100]

It’s a thematically compelling, stylistically coherent and fully realized 22 hours of television.

"Veronica Mars" plays even better on DVD than it did on TV.... But sadly, this DVD... offers virtually nothing for those who already watched the episodes on UPN.

The smartest high school drama since Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars is The O.C. as penned by Raymond Chandler.

One of the most off-beat and refreshingly tart TV detectives in decades.

It’s fun, smart and brimming with enough adventure and mystery to keep you coming back week after week. [Individual grades: Video 8, Audio 7, Extras 2, Film Value 8]

If seeing the first season is what it will take to make you a follower, and it might be, get the DVD set.

While the video does not impress and the lack of extras is a problem, I am not going to let those negatives influence the set's final score too much for one reason: DVD was invented for shows like this.

I was a HUGE fan of this show for the first two seasons. Indeed, I was an apostle for it. I really did think it was a fantastic wedding of Twin Peaks, The Maltese Falcon, BtVS, and The OC. Bell was perfect. Logan was a great, complex character. The dialogue was often wickedly creative and clever, without being too twee or too borscht belt. And the show dealt honestly with Neptune. Veronica both contemned the social irresponsibility of the affluent and, like any real person, envied their affluence. The sleuthing of Season One was smart and plausible. The kissing was sweet and sexy. This show had everything ,and then it flushed itself in Season Three. The introdicktion of Piz changed the culture of the show. I'm not a music nerd. I can't sympathize with band people, but I can sympathetic will sweet, vulnerable characters. Piz would have been an okay counterbalance to Logan, if Piz were not a music nerd. Furthermore, the Third Season's fixation on date rape, while perhaps socially valuable, grew damn tedious. One or two episodes would've been fine. But not the whole season. This plot line introduced a host of college stereotypes (the angry feminist, etc..) that made the show predictable, less plastic and protean. I think what must have happened is that Rob Thomas succumbed toe the pressure to use his successful show as a soapbox, which sank it. You can't mix politics and art. It's sad, because the first season on 'Veronica Mars' exited a lot of people in a really, really good way. But the show simplified itself. The relationship between Logan and Veronica a splayed down, and that relationship represented the brilliance of the show because it transcended all easy moral classification. It suggested that 'VM' was willing to be creative and intelligent at the expense of being ethical.

Only just discovered this show after all these years. It's seriously one of the best shows I've ever seen. Only other show to have made such an impact on me is Freaks and Geeks. Can't wait to finish watching all 3 seasons.
