Comedy doesn't require a side of smirk. And unfortunately, the bulk of the first night of her new talk show was devoted to stand-up that was relentlessly political....The good news is that there's plenty of potential in Sykes's new show.

It was, overall, a smart start, though it had a few potholes, as well. The biggest of these was the inclusion of Sykes' friend and comic Keith Robinson as a quasi-sidekick. In that capacity, he was about as useful as an echo chamber.

Sykes is one of America's funniest comics, and almost inevitably, a few of the jokes (an opening jab at Ann Coulter's batting eyelashes, a bit about Nicolas Cage's financial woes, some of the biting-the-hands-the-feed her attacks on Fox) were funny. But too many missed the mark, and too many were attacks without much of a stab at comedy at all.

If you like Wanda Sykes’s standup comedy, you’re probably going to like her weekly Wanda Sykes Show.

Sykes uses some of the traditional genre tropes--comedian Keith Robinson is her sidekick--but the show is clearly about her and her comedy rather than the guests. Unfortunately, at least in the debut, she was not at her comedic best.

All told, The Wanda Sykes Show is off to a decidedly shaky start.

Cathy E gave it a0:
I didn't care for the show anyway but especially when I saw the episode where they joked about being killed by a chimp,I will never even turn my tv on when she's on,I have one channel and when I see her on...OFF IT GOES! disgrace to the woman who so clearly was almost killed by a chimp! She should be ashamed!
Mick R gave it a0:
There are people in line for American Idol that are funnier than this and they "think" they are singers. How did Wanda get a show? how? Who screened this crap and said yes? How did this get past pilot?
heather r gave it a0:
awful, unfunny, a cringe inducing and wretched retread of "politically correct" humor that fell flat that first time...in the 80s.
Rhonda B gave it a0:
Horrendous drivel. This woman is not at all funny or smart. She is just annoying.
Devin C gave it a10:
I was sooo close to laughing once tonight.
Roy Rodgers gave it a2:
What a boring show. I think the audience clapping instead of laughing speaks for itself.
Brent V gave it a4:
Wanda's new show is almost painfully unwatchable. There are moments of hilarity in a desert of dullness. She seems to be trying to hard. It's nothing like her stand-up, which is clever and a bit edgy. This is a disappointment.
