Summary

Starring John Goodman, Chris Kattan, Ethan Suplee, Eddie Griffin, Delta Burke, Harvey Fierstein, Michael McKean, and Carol Kane

For some unknown reason, the stop-motion animated holiday classic (that's right, the one with Heatmiser and Snowmiser) has been remade into a live-action movie.

What's strange is the new live-action "Santa" and the old stop-motion animation "Santa" have one big thing in common: They both start out pretty bad -- bad acting, bad scenes -- then get better as they go and end satisfyingly.

With a spot-on cast that includes a grumpy John Goodman as the big guy and Chris Kattan as a power-hungry elf, parents can stomach it just as well as the youngsters. [18 Dec 2006, p.41]

A couple of hours with this film won't substitute for a visit to The Nutcracker or The Messiah, but it's better than another episode of CSI.

In its quieter, old-fashioned moments, it's fine, but once it trots out the cameos and Mother Nature's feuding sons, it turns as noisy and distracting as a last-minute shopping trip to the mall.

Seemingly made for (and perhaps by) those who have hit the eggnog too hard, the result is a peculiar holiday yarn can't decide whether it wants to be heartwarming or camp.

It's as if the creators blew all their cash on the cast and underestimated viewers' ability to spot the places they'd skimped: cheap soundstage production, poor direction -- Delta Burke looks plain lobotomized as Mrs. Claus -- and gaping, lame writing.

Gerrick C gave it a4:
This may seem like a nice treat for those of us who enjoyed watching the original movie, but actually this version is all dumbed down. John Goodman plays Santa Claus, and you'll see many other characters from the original such as the lovable Heat Miser and Snow Miser. The movie is made to fit modern day life, and it just does not fit. The one thing about the movie I hated was the song between the Miser brothers was botched up. The brothers had scantly-clad women prancing about during their diddy and it just does not do the original justice. The movie, despite the great example to work off of, falls down.

Priscilla B gave it a3:
It really doesn't measure up to the 1974 Rankin Bass version. I thought Goodman was a decent Santa but it seemed like the whole thing was thrown together rather quickly. 5 people in this house (ages 6-42) watched and all agreed... we'd rather watch the original.
