This is were it started to get really good. The reason are changes in the cast behind the scenes. Michael Piller was hired and put the focus more on character interactions and development. Also the episodes got a lot better in general. There are no weak episodes in this season and many must see recommendations. I will say this season is full of masterpieces without failures as final statement here. Many credited this to the change that anyone can come up with a script and submit it. More scripts mean automatically also more good scripts or good ideas that can be used. They used a lot of great ideas with remarkable stories and characters. For the cast we get Dr. Crusher back which is a win. I liked Dr. Pulaski but see why others disliked her. I think it was the script for her character, not her acting that was good, that made her role unpopular. With Reginald Barclay we got a good addition to the crew. I like Dwight Schultz as actor and his unusual roles. It is the last season with Wesley Crusher. I think his character was not used well enough. For the general story the Romulans were properly introduced here and you will see that there will be tensions in the future. This season has also the best final episode and cliffhanger you can imagine. It was torture to wait for the resolve. Again the special and practical effects improved and have aged well. Overall this is the season that started the legacy of TNG and you can see why. My favorite episodes / recommendations are: “The Survivors” for its mystery, characters, resolve and story that is on of my favorites of the show that I will especially praise here, “Who watches the Watchers” for the theme, set up, resolve and general idea, “The Booby Trap” for the said trap, situation and solution, “The Enemy” for setting up the Romulans and references, “The Vengeance Factor” for the character Yuta, idea and story, “The Defector” for its plot, dilemma and conclusion that teaches you a lot about Romulans, “The Hunted” for the really great idea, cat and mouse game and brilliant resolution; It is another of my favorite episodes of the show, “The high ground” for showing both sides and let the viewer decide and also the intense menace, “A Matter of Perspective” for the who done it story, philosophy and clever resolve, “Sins of the Father” for the things that will come out of it and the Klingon's, “Allegiance” for the idea and Picard who is excellent here, “Tin Man” for Tam Elbrun, the set up, Gomtuu and the fitting ending, “The Most Toys” for Data and his arc / development; He is more human than he thinks, “Transfiguration” for the story, character John and the uncovering of the truth; It is a masterpiece for the ideas alone and finally “The Best of Both Worlds” for the Borg and their intense menace. You all know that this would come. It is always in the top 5 for all episodes of the show. Great acting, set up and the best cliffhanger in all Star Trek and maybe even outside.
This is the first season of the very height of TNG, where some of the best stories, character developments and dramatic sequences happen. This continues on for two more seasons until it slowly starts to fall from season 6. This is why TNG is still one of the best TV shows ever made.
The focus on longer story arcs and character development, rather than ‘mission of the week’ episodes, meant this was a significant improvement over the first two season. Each of the main cast were given a chance to shine, and of course the introduction of The Borg (easily the series most fearsome enemies) upped the stakes considerably.
Star trek season 3 emerges with high increase in terms of quality bringing this franchise on top of sci-fi genre. With great mix of action, drama and solid acting TNG season 3 is timeless not just fur sci-fi fans.
