StartUp is a thinking-person’s thriller, along the lines of USA’s “Mr. Robot.” Ketai delves into greed, corruption, violence and more, and none of his characters are immune to any of it.
Some limp decisions make it feel more like a Models Inc. reboot with fewer models, more Bit coin. But it's worth watching just for Edi Gathegi, who bring star-making charisma and unwarranted pathos to the role of a criminal who (sigh) wants to go straight. [9 Sep 2016, p.55]

A great drama that brings tech startup, mafia and old school exec investor together.
The characters acting is nothing less than phenomenal. Each and every season brings a breath of fresh season.
I'm not sure what metacritic's critics have given such a low score. We need to find a way to give reviews to critics. lol.

Sometimes it feels like it’s trying to hard to fit a predefined standard, throwing in “grittier” bits without establishing purpose. Freeman, though, is something to see (especially for fans), and there are just enough memorable moments to keep StartUp out of the red.
The show’s sex and violence propel the story, but not quite to the speed necessary to occlude its problems. If you work extra hard to suspend disbelief, it’s modestly entertaining.
StartUp takes its three leads--along with Martin Freeman’s morally compromised FBI agent, whose hunt for the missing money is fueled by personal greed more than professional determination--and strands them in a swamp of sweaty sex scenes (there are three in the first third of the premiere alone) and unnecessary, over-the-top action set-pieces.
[Creator Ben] Ketai can't figure out how to make action-free things like character development, backstory and setting flow within the storytelling, and even the action that felt like it came so naturally to Chosen doesn't flow here.
The 10-episode series--like The Art of More--unfolds at a sleepy pace, and only plays with style (like one particularly great unbroken shot in the first hour), without committing to it.
Great acting, especially from Martin Freeman.
Only made it to the start of series 2 before giving up though, as the plot is very weak and full of holes.
Examples are plenty... This is no Breaking Bad unfortunately.
Phil is determined to end things, but being blackmailed somehow changes his mind, even though he was already destined to be caught for his crime anyway?
Izzy is happy to screw everyone over because "Gencoin succeeding is all that matters ". But then she's unhappy when it's successful without her...
The team have one last shot to try and get their business back using Phil at the end of season 1, I'm expecting some amazing grand plan - but instead they fail instantly at a very basic plan, and Phil is used against them.
Izzy is supposed to be a genius, but they were all outclassed by a very predictable set of events, and her sister gets killed at random in response.
None of the characters bother to reflect on their failures.
The Russians think Nick is a liability, but instead of killing him they just send him to jail for a very short time.
By this stage you sort of just give up caring about the characters or what happens next, especially to Izzy who is the worst example of a self entitled spoilt brat.

Absolutely phenomenal. works well with giving viewers a whirlwind of emotion. excellent casting. script. the whole nine yards. fantastic work. I can’t even explain in words which is a first for me. i am usually well articulated when it comes to this kind of thing, but i am just so impressed. fantastic work on behalf of everyone who created this masterpiece. keep up the good work.

What a mess. The actors give it there all, vut theres almost nothing to work with conceptually and with the writing. Izzy suffers the worst. A character so poorly concieved and written that not even Kate Winslett could save it. This poor conception and writing keeps bashing the viewer over and over without end.. The russian gangster plot is so poorly written that it begs the question, does the creator understand what research is? This is like silicon Valley, directed by Michael Bay, written by David Goyer. Its an absolute disaster.
Thats not to say its all bad. The show is gorgeous and the actors give it there all, no matter how bad the writing is. The directors also make the best of it, by at least infusing energy into the style of the show, no matter how hard the creator and his goblin writers try to make the audience become dumber by every word uttered. Oh and the title track is great.
