  1. Each part has edge-of-the-seat moments, thanks to some admirable performances as well as several intriguing new plot twists that inject surprise at key moments.

This version of “The Andromeda Strain” is paced well; it gives Crichton’s story a hint of blandness but it also marches through the plot with no-nonsense efficiency.
  3. For about three hours and 40 minutes, the mini-series rockets along, an exciting pile of preposterousness with conspiratorial overtones. Then it fizzles, with stuff you've seen 1,000 times before, and irritating loose ends.

Where the movie was content to focus on that process, director Mikael Salomon and writer-playwright Robert Schenkkan throw in a veritable kitchen sink of elements. [...] Too bad, because the project has assembled a solid cast, even if they're constrained by spouting all that scientific jargon and spend too much time squabbling and grappling with outside distractions.
  5. It never grows quite suspenseful enough, and it rests on the rather un-sci-fi-ish idea that the future is a benign force, like a mentor uncle with something meaningful to teach us about our venality and callous disregard for the Earth.

As each new element is added, explored and explained, the tension evident in the original novel gets watered down as we digest these other distractions. The result is completely devoid of any suspense.
  7. If it's relevant and reflects the hip themes of today, perhaps nobody will notice wooden acting, ludicrous dialogue and a plot so convoluted that the whole enterprise has as much tension as a broken violin string.

For sci-fi fans there's some fun to be had watching this very improbable storyline if you turn your brain off. The movie stumbles For sci-fi fans there's some fun to be had watching this very improbable storyline if you turn your brain off. The movie stumbles several times with a boring "military conspiracy" plot that should not have been written into the story at all. Unlike some of the professional reviewers, I quite liked the science lab procedural scenes. Most of the technical jargon was at least trying to be scientifically accurate. Unfortunately the plot goes off into total la-la land in the last 30 minutes and there's are some gigantic plot holes that would make almost any sci-fi fan frown. A missed opportunity for all those involved in making this film. Expand

Despite capitalizing on 37 years of improved special effects, the mini series actually regresses in story telling.

I'm feeling generous today or it (the rating) would be lower. Good actors /bad acting. Too many loose ends and second rate special I'm feeling generous today or it (the rating) would be lower. Let's see, other than the bad script, terrible casting, cheapoid production, and horrible direction, this is a darn fine mini-series. Oh Let's see, other than the bad script, terrible casting, cheapoid production, and horrible direction, this is a darn fine mini-series. Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the definition of mini-series; a device to cram 2 hours of story into a 4 hour (or more) time slot. So this thing doesn't drag - oh no.... So what's all this mean? The remake of The Andromedia Strain is nothing but trash, plain and simple. And what really amazes me is that the Scott brothers are aassociated with this turkey - they should know better. Expand
