Although it can sometimes feel like jokes are repeated, the show is a shining example of geek culture, full of funny comic, movie and video game references that young people, like me, will lap up.

The Big Bang Theory is the easily the best and funniest sitcom since a long time. It has new ideas, has something for geeks but also normal viewers (I showed it to friends who are in no way a geek shown in TBBT) and almost every scene is absolutely funny. Sometimes jaw-dropping funny. Sitting there and thinking: "Did he really say what I just heard?" The first season shows something new, the next seasons are even better. I can accept that some people may have a problem with the geeky stuff, the long sentences and to understand what is meant, but I cannot accept that this is not funny at all. Those who write that just want to put the ratings down. Really, nothing more than that. How can one give less than 5 points for this? Sorry, I won't see which sitcoms you rate higher. Sheldon is the most intimidating geek ever seen on TV, the others are not far behind. The only issue I have at the moment is that most jokes base on sexual relationships or intersexual behaviour. Some episodes are almost classics. Great unique episodes you will never forget and you do not experience watching other sitcoms. Expand

The first and second season demonstrates how even a geeky, nerdy, and sex-desperate bunch of guys can be hella fun. The Big Bang Theory shows more promise than any other sitcoms out there right now. The show gave Jim Parsons a chance to show off his unlikable but likable at the same time, face. What a great show!

A fresh idea but executed poorly. Pandering to masses, BBT explains in excruciating detail any reference to geek or pop culture and eventually becomes just another sitcom. Over use of laugh track detracts from actual jokes, while many of its characters rely on the same gimmick far too often.

A huge number of the "jokes" made me groan out loud. The "nerd" lingo that is plied so heavily throughout for laughs just isn't funny. That said, there were three jokes in the show that actually made me laugh out loud. The girl guides getting into the building, the joke the one guy made made about his future kids and his friend's comeback, and one other that's momentarily escaping me as I write this (oh well.) Personally, I think this show could become much better if the writers would stop trying to beat us over the head with their "nerd" lingo and let their two main leads breathe a little more as real people. I may check in on this show again in 2 or 3 episodes to see if it's improved any. Expand

Intelligent, science jokes are a welcome break from the typical mindless plebeian jokes seen on virtually every other sitcom now and in the past, beside perhaps Frasier - in fact, thinking on it, The Big Bang Theory is a less pretentious Frasier for the science inclined.

This is the funniest and smartest thing that television has shown in decades. The irony used in the show is so brilliant and so well written between smart jokes and scientifically facts that the average American is curse never to get it (and probably hates the show) but this is an original, intelligent and fascinating series that I can't not wait to see every week. Let's just hope CBS does not compromise to keep the era of "The OC" and "Reality TV CRAP" let's them get this wonderful show of the air Expand

The first American show ever to have really advanced jokes, sure they often mix the jokes with pure stupidity but if you actually know a bit of quantum theory (not many does) the jokes get about 5 times as good. Unfortunately the show more or less falls flatt in many cases since the average person won't be able to get jokes about theoretical physics. But for us nerds out there, this is pure gold. Expand

Anyone who says this show is over anyones head clearly doesn't see the complete lack of originality in the premise of this show. Nerds love Star Trek, Star Wars and are afraid of girls?!! Wow how original! I have never seen this joke made before! Please what a joke! That is the best joke this show has made, thinking that this is in anyway highbrow humor or a new premise. This isn9;t even a fresh spin on an old premise, which I would even welcome if it meant this show was off the air. Expand

The laughter is totally forced and the jokes based on dumb humor. The show's portrayal of "geek" culture is inaccurate to the point where it can be considered satire. At least they tried to get the facts right in the show.

I tried hard to watch this show based on what everyone else haas said about it, but I couldn't make it past the first part. The laughter was forced and the dialogue was generic almost to overly mishap the relationships between the "nerds." This is bad example of tryingto get the geek culture into mainstream.

This isnt comedy. This show is not funny in the slightest. And its not because im not clever enough to get the jokes, its because there are hardly any jokes in it, and whem one does finally come along, its the opposite of funny. Is there even a plot? I cannot believe the number of people that actually swallow this garbage.

I can't believe this show made it past the initial 13 episode order. Tired jokes, tired premise and just lame all around. It tries hard to be that comedy that people cal the "if you don't get it you just aren't smart enough show" but fails miserably. While Frasier, Arrested Development and others were very successful in this arena Bang just falls flat. I don't understand how the whole "nerds are only good at being nerds and are afraid of girls and social interactions" thing is still supposed to be funny but apparently people find this tired old premise funny for some reason or another. Just dumb, boring and completely humorless. This show lacks any originality and wastes the talent of otherwise good actors. Expand

Three camera style sitcoms are lame in general, but this one manages to feature even less believable negative nerd stereotypes than Steve Urkel. I don't think any of the writers has ever met an actual nerd. The goal of the writing seems to be to make it's viewers feel better about antagonizing them in high school. And even being personally insulted by every single line wouldn39;t be so bad if any of the jokes were remotely funny, any of the situations not completely forced, or if any of the characters seemed remotely similar to any human being you might actually meet in real life. The worst show ever. One dimensional characters, very stupid jokes. I really get all the jokes, I love science, I know geek: I was living in a house full of geeks playing WoW 24 hours (when he was out, he left a bot playing for him!). I love science, quantum physics, astrophysics. Believe me, even I get the jokes they are poorly delivered and too exaggerated. When compared to such sitcoms as 'Friends', this refreshing piece of work may not seem so emotionally gripping, however 'The Big Bang Theory' has enough originality, side-splitting jokes, and bravery in surprising the viewer in a humorous fashion.

Big Bang Theory is a so called "comedy" that stars 4 socially retarded "geniuses" that thrive on being completely stupid socially and performing intellectual masturbation repeatedly during any given episode. The jokes in the show all center around geek/nerd culture and the aforementioned intellectual masturbation of the four characters; 90% of the time, the jokes miss the funny boat completely and just come across as stupid and mean spirited. None of the characters are remotely likable, and the stories that the writers come up with are just garbage. How this show is liked is beyond me. Expand

Fans of the show can easily dismiss those who dislike it by saying that they don't get the humor and the references. I did but I still didn't enjoy it. The execution of these nerd jokes are particularly poor, with the show constantly telling us to laugh because the nerd said something nerdy. As I said before, I understood the references but the show didn't do anything with them. It just points to them without using them effectively. Just because you get a joke doesn't make it funny. The first two seasons are borderline good/average, but afterwards it's just a downward spiral to boredom, geek/nerd cliches and bad jokes, they should make the show less Sheldon-centric and give more space to something else.

This show is entirely unrealistic but not in a good way. It relies on a cliched and offensive view of "geeks" & intelligent people that is entirely inaccurate. Being smart doesn't make you socially inept or prone to deliver corny & obvious science jokes. That said, a lot of people think this is how smart people behave. I guess you can't blame Chuck Lorre for pandering to that demographic.

I heard so much hype about this show that I decided to give it a shot and watched maybe 5 episodes with the hopes that it might improve. I honestly didn't find it entertaining in the least, much less, funny. I consider myself a geek in a lot of respects so I thought I could empathize with the characters, but they're at best just stereotypical characters making for stale entertainment. The creators don't seem to see that understanding references to geek/nerd culture does't and and of itself make the show appealing to geeks and nerds. I don't mean to make a broad generalization here, but the friends of mine who do enjoy this show are the ones who have high thresholds for offensive content (i.e.: the idea that women will stop being rational and forgive your wrongs if you give them a tiara) and are typically thought of as the daft ones in the group, though, they don't identify as geeks or nerds either. This is one of my favorite shows as a student. Many people don't really understand the humor incorporated into this TV show, but that doesn't give you a right to say it's a bad show. Think about it this way, you're still in grade school and still innocently pure and one day someone tells a dirty joke and everybody laughs. Now, you don't get it, and you automatically perceive it as a "bad joke" because you couldn't get the punch line. That's all I have to say about the humor. I, myself, honestly love it. It's very unique and has its own taste unlike the generic running gags of the many other sitcoms that exist. Now, I have some things to say about the poorly written reviews given by the critics. Maureen Ryan; Hi. I'm sorry, but does every TV Show have to be about characters who love each other all the time? In every little clique out there, and this is the truth, there has to be that ONE person we all hate. Dane Cook even said it himself. It's what makes everything funnier. We all pick at the guy, we laugh and make jokes behind his back, because as human beings we take joy in stepping on others. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, but it's the truth right? And it's funny, admit it. It's just a show with a character with a very unusual personality that contrasts the popular opinion on the sleek, funny guy who says the best punchlines and dirty jokes. I personally believe Sheldon was one of the reasons why this show is a success! To Alan Sepinwall and Mike Duffy, I'm pretty sure the both of you choose the books with the best covers to read unless they're timeless classics or are critically acclaimed. TV Shows are like books. You can't judge them by their pilot episode. Remember that before you write a one line review that doesn't help define the interior of what you hated in the show. Sure, first impressions last, but do all the greatest people on Earth start out with an amazing background, family life, and education? Are you saying that because the pilot was uninteresting to you, you just automatically decide the show couldn't improve? Or that the writers have a surprise for you? Mr. Duffy, if you actually continued to watch the show before writing your first review, you would know that Jim Parson's characters doesn't even lust after Kaley Cuoco's character. But you didn't! Because you, like Mr. Sepinwall, judged The Big Bang Theory by its pilot and hated it. I sure hope you don't do that for all the TV Shows you review. What could be the greatest shows on earth don't deserve the low ratings they have based on one little pilot. Don't get the humor? That's cool, this show is probably a little to intellectual for your taste. Offensive and stereotypical? Um, mostly all shows are offensive and stereotypical. There's going to be offensive stuff out there in the world. You can't stop satirical comedy. Just deal with it. The Big Bang Theory really can't be compared to any other show. It's its own genre, its own kind of humor, and its own lovable characters. Expand

A surprisingly overrated show. In one entire episode I might have laughed twice, at best. Maybe it's because all I hear is people talking about show and, in turn, has rubbed me the wrong way or maybe it's the fact that I hang out with nerds, so watching a show about nerds and even more confusing to the average viewer, nerd jargon, it just doesn't appeal to me. The show desperately needs a better writter. The jokes are not funny, the acting is atrocious and worst of all, every character is stereotyped. Nerds aren't necessarily awkward, but they are in this show. This show deserves the Most Overrated Show of the Year... For 2011, that is. 3/10. Expand

Don't be fooled by the physicist characters and their occasional academic talk....this show is pretty low-brow. This show should be renamed stereotypes because that's all this idiotic show relies on, stupid stereotypes that are extremely off and things that have nothing to do with geeks, nerds, or what ever you want to call them. cliche's that have been done to death since since the 80's and if just stupid. Shows like this are responsible for re-enforcing the negative stereotypes that go along with bullying Shows like this are responsible for all the picking on and teasing that goes on in HS..MS..so on. The writers should be ashamed of themselves and I hope that they one day have a son or daughter that gets picked on in school for the very same jokes they write.

The Big Bang Theory is a breakthrough for science geek-targeted sitcoms. That being said, there are many flaws that keep it from being appreciable by all geeks. Firstly, occasionally its science is wrong in a way that would actually make the episode different; and yet just about every geek in this seems to have vast stores of knowledge on every form of science, which makes it harder to believe the characters and actually kills the possibility of more geek jokes (sociologist and a biologist duking it out over biological essentialism?). The distinction between the geeks lie in social stereotypes (the uber-nerd, the horny-guy, the Indian, etc.) rather than fields of study. Even so, there is a strong emphasis on straight, white, male nerds, with only a token Indian male and White female. Unless we're looking at specifically D&D nerds (which are still not homogeneous), it's incredibly misrepresentative to not include more "minorities" in the regular cast and it can alienate the many viewers who can get the jokes but can't relate. The central plotline (romantic tension with the neighbor) is much harder to believe as the neighbor, Penny, is stupid, ignorant, not in the slightest bit curious about what they're talking about, is stereotypically 'blonde,' and has absolutely no chemistry with the male lead. In fact, the only thing that implies that there is any chemistry between her and the main character, Leonard, is the terribly abused laugh track, which makes some of the more subtle jokes fall on their face or be neglected entirely. It seems that the laugh track is intended to tell the non-science geeks when they should laugh, but reviews by non-geeks reveal that it's not helping. The good aspects of this show lie in the geek in-jokes. Some are simply cheesy, but overall they appeal to higher thought and involve an array of sciences. While the plotlines are underdeveloped, most of the humor is based in researched science makes it worth watching. Even the factual inaccuracies are excuseable as it is militant in defining the scientific method with accuracy. Overall, it's a fun watch, but it's a long way from being a respectable portrayal of geeks. Expand

Absolutely awesome, watched the pilot and was hooked, made my bf watch it and we are seriously ADDICTED!!!every episode just gets better and better....VIVA BIG BANG!!! P.S. To those banging on the stereotype card: Maybe you should consider that a show like this actually makes people see a different side of those so-called-stereotypes or maybe its just me that see it that way.

I like how all of the reviews are either 10s or 0s. This show is entertaining. They hooked me on the characters. I live in L.A. and consider myself a nerd so I guess that makes it more digestible for me. Sure, the show is on a set and formulaic but I find it entertaining. If the show was just about Sheldon I'd watch just that. Jim Parsons is amazing. It is cleverly written to appeal to the masses, and although I'm the more cerebral type, and like off-beat humor like Curb or AD, sometimes I don't want to think and just LOL. This show does that for me. Expand

Nice concept of nerds and new blond neighbor. First episode was entertaining. Let's hope the concept doesn't go stale.

What a great show. Intelligent dialogue. No off-color comments, cast works well together. And didn't I see the blonde in "8 Rules"?

This show is hilarious. Yes, they are nerds. Yes, she is dingy. Their characters play off wonderfully with each other. Sheldon is one of the best straight men that I have seen in a long time. I think everyone will get in touch with their "inner nerd" watching this show.

I love this type of "super smarty pants" comedy! Only, I hope they keep the comedy fresh and not always reliant on stereo-typical nerd references. I would also love to see more exploration into the complexity of the nerd characters' vulnerable, sensitive sides when they learn they don’t have the answers to everything – especially real life problems life.

Entertaining and will keep on tuning in, but I haven't found it funny. It may be that I relate with the guys that I find it entertaining but not funny though. I get the humor, but it isn't funny to me.

i loved it. don't see this as being a hit on "geeks or others that may be picked on". I have a child who has seen many years of geekdom and not so nice people around him. We made it through with laughter and with the help of a very pretty and nice young girl who befriended him. Life may not be as funny as sitcoms but maybe sitcoms can help others to see more interaction is possible.

Clever show! Some jokes are easily seen coming, but it's not about reinventing the wheel. It's a show about a few geeks, and it REALLY does the job well. VERY funny! Hell, even my girlfriend (who's not a geek) loves it!

I literally laugh out loud every time I watch this. I find Sheldon to be a Gen X version of Niles Crane -- but still pretty unique in his own right.

Best Comedy on CBS. So squeaky clean and innocent. You may not understand the science, but the heart if the matter is there. These "nerds" live in a conflicting world of reason and fantasy. I knew guys like this in college. I ask myself every week, could Sheldon be any more neurotic? And every week the answer is yes. Thank you CBS for airing a sitcom with integrity- not relying on cleavage, sexual innuendo or some nerdy foreign guy with an accent- oh wait.... Expand

Without a doubt the funniest and brightest sit-com on TV today. I hope it will remain for a few more seasons. There's so much material to work with yet to let this one die out.

Critic score distribution:
  1. Positive: 8 out of 23
  2. Negative: 4 out of 23
  1. It may not be a creative breakthrough, but it's lots funnier than the universal equation would predict.
  2. Standard setup? Sure. Standard execution? For the most part.

The show might even have been engaging, if the one-liners came less frequently and the characters had a little more dimension. As it is, Sheldon and Leonard are merely laughable, if sweet, and they are even less fleshed out than the characters on "Two and a Half Men."
