Mr. Colbert's on-camera persona may not wear well over the long term, but for now at least "The Colbert Report" is a worthy spinoff, an icy-cold beer chaser to the shot of whiskey that is "The Daily Show."
"The Daily Show" spinoff has gotten off to an impressive start with a topnotch premiere followed by a respectable second outing that underscores just how challenging it will be to sustain this half-hour high-wire act four nights a week.

Best intelligent comedy show out there. I will miss Colbert when it ends. Few comedians are this quick witted and intelligent. Rarely disappoints thanks to good writing. Daily show on the other hand sometimes falls flat, but Colbert has a better consistency and energy. Have a fictitious host is absolutely brilliant. Steven's interviews are excellent, even with "boring" guests you never heard of.

SEASON 1
Much better than John Stewart. The main difference between the two is that Stewart will insult Republicans directly by calling them stupid or dysfunctional or ****, while Colbert just impersonates what a Republican would say. This makes Colbert much easier to watch especially if you lean right. Colbert is also great with puns and wordplay that will make you laugh no matter who you are. Great show. One of my favorites.

When it is clicking, The Colbert Report is Countdown on mescaline -- occasionally brilliant, occasionally loopy, definitely entertaining.
The new show dovetails nicely with its lead-in to present a solid hour of skewered news and punctured pomposity.
A few kinks are painfully apparent. Foremost among them is the blowhard persona Colbert forces on us for half an hour. It feels like a weaker extension of "The Daily Show."
This would be hilarious, except that political talk TV has become such a parody of itself that watching them is more than enough comedy for anybody.
What worked so well in short Daily Show-sized bites wears thin over a half-hour program.
It feels weird to say The Colbert Report is an immensely intelligent and witty since the title character is made with the purpose of being a complete idiot, but that is exactly what this show is. I have been watching for years, and it seems like it is only getting better every week. Now I think it might be even better than The Daily Show, and that is impressive.

Colbert's satirical sense of humor as well as his off-the-wall style not only breaks through the usual style of political comedy show, but becomes the ultimate part of his comedic genius.
