It's gripping stuff, seamlessly blending the larger tension of the world with the smaller dramas back at 165 Eaton.

No sooner has Upstairs veered toward farce than it redeems itself, again and again.

The refurbished series isn't as sharp as the '70s original (one of the lead characters is a monkey), and the Hollands aren't as juicy as the Granthams (literally no Turks die during sex), but it's still a whole lot of fun to look at.

At times, the show careens from black humor to near tragedy and then back again.

The performances are all fine, as far as they go, but the script is filled with heavily telegraphed developments, inept character development and direction so scattershot, you're advised to have a supply of Dramamine at the ready to quell the motion sickness brought on by all the quick cuts.3907328.php#ixzz284ZLgzlk

Frankly, it's a dispiriting season and I won't miss the show nearly as much as I'll miss Blake Ritson's charming turn as Sir Hallam's royal friend, the Duke of Kent.

This is a family that could use some ruffling, with precious little chemistry between the series leads.
