You'd think this would lead to all manner of generic story beats. But LaBute and his writers (as well as stalwart TV director Michael Nankin, who does some truly terrific, atmospheric work in these first three installments) manage to give the material a distinctive tweak or two.
The characters take forever to make narrative connections that seem immediately obvious and no one seems remotely curious about what exactly is happening to the world. Yet even as her hours-long insistence that she is nothing “special” grows tedious, Vanessa is delightfully cranky.
I enjoyed the show tremendously, and I can't wait for season 3 to finally come out. I'm very excited to see what Vanessa and the gang encounter next in their horrific adventures.
love this show Vanessa is kick ass. i dont care what anybody says this show rocks. couldnt stop watching it. will be watching it in the future. i love vampire shows like this.
It gets off to a slow start, but Van Helsing picks up in the second episode. It is also super violent and super gory. If you like that sort of thing, you might want to give this a chance.
It is excessively gory and often grotesque (the foley artists must have had a ball with this one), but that can’t make up for the fact that it’s just not particularly unique or compelling.
It starts off slow and like any other SyFi channel show, but after a couple of minutes you get to notice the great production values and solid acting that said station is not usually known for. Its main cast are very like-able and all deliver decent performances that help make the story both interesting and convincing. The vampires are well played but a bit campy and it will be interesting to see how this show pans out and i suggest that people stick with it because with the right amount of people viewing this new gem it could gain a massive fan following. The outdoors special effects like with the sky are a bit cheesy but it doesnt take away from the overall look of each episode and overall the story is going from strength to strength. i was pleasantly surprised by this because i was expecting to turn it off after a couple of minutes of the first episode thinking it would be a typical SyFi show but ended up watching all 3 episodes and enjoying every bit of it. i shall be tuning in each week and i highly suggest you do also.
A solid 5/10. Nothing special really, a few good ideas which are never fully explored. Some good characters, except the main protagonist who loves to over react and is often an **** for no apparent reason, except to look cool and be "tough generic female". Don't get me wrong there are a loads of problems with the other characters, but i think you should at least get the shows main protagonist right. In the end, i forced myself through the season just to see if it improves. It does i guess. But i hoping the next season is better, there are some really cool ideas.
In the first episode, I thought, this is not just another version of the stupid vampire series, it has something more after the second episode opinion drastically changed. I would not expect much from this series totally going in the wrong direction. The series has great potential but if this continues there is no future for the series. Maybe I'm wrong, see a couple of episodes, so judge for yourself.
I'm 7 episodes in, and asides from plot developing at a snail's pace with a lot of unnecessary scenes; the plot itself is pretty substandard. The show has nothing to do with Van Helsing or Dracula, and the 'vampires' are nothing more than zombies. I've been having hopes that the 'survalist' element of the show could keep me watching, but it's so far mostly filled with drama between survivors, useless/annoying characters, and poorly explained/redundant villains.
In recent years there has been a resurgence of the undead apocalypse theme in media. Many companies have been trying to find a way of milking this current fad/trend. This show is clearly a product of this. The show tries to be unique by making the undead creatures/people vampires instead of zombies, unfortunately this has already been done before by others (Most recently "The Strain"). The show is poorly written and doesn't bring anything worthwhile to the undead apocalypse genre.
