A wonderfully complex drama, with plenty of sly humor, that showcases slick performances from its two stars, and magically straddles the parallel universes of film noir and high school high jinks, while generously tossing out amusing asides. [22 Sept 2004, p.D1]
As cool as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" but with less other-worldly problems - date rape, a missing mother and a murder mystery among them - Veronica's navigating the tricky waters of a town full of secrets, on a network that until this season wasn't known for creating shows this good. If you’re not stuck in the high school days of Veronica Mars then you’ll absolutely love season 4. It takes huge risk and growth to show you Veronica isn’t a marshmallow anymore. Can’t wait to see how the capitalize on it in season 5!

"Veronica" doesn't pretend it's still 2004. She's a thirty-something woman who still works her high-school job, and there's no pretending it's glamorous. And for this genre, and this character, the themes of wasted potential and existential angst fit perfectly.
The adult intelligence is still there, and Bell and Colantoni are still wonderful together, consistently nailing the old-Hollywood, tough-and-tender style the show demands and demonstrating seemingly effortless comic grace. But Thomas hasn’t found a really satisfactory replacement for the show’s loss of teen spirit; and the grown-up romantic travails of Veronica and Logan, a significant subplot in the new season, aren’t as compelling as their tempestuous high school amours. ... [Still,] “Veronica Mars” finds ways to charm you.
As Veronica, Bell delightfully plays the clash between sarcasm and sweetness. The actress, who appeared in Deadwood, is one of the most valuable performers this fall. As her struggling detective father, Enrico Colantoni displays more charm than he ever did on Just Shoot Me. [22 Sept 2004, p.E1]
Has its moments, but the whole story drags, especially in the first half. There’s just not a good enough mystery at the heart of this season to justify eight episodes.
There are a few new characters that are life preservers in this murky swamp of uninteresting plots.
The plot of Twin Peaks meets the tone of Buffy, Veronica Mars is eminently watchable, although it never quite reaches the heights of either of the shows that inspired it. While lifted by excellent performances by a talented cast, the show struggles at times to organically work the same group of characters into a new murder mystery every season, and it is perhaps too reliant on soap-opera storylines which are discarded almost as quickly as they are generated. As a mystery show it rarely succeeds beyond the first season, but as a drama it is quite enjoyable throughout, and if one is willing to suspend disbelief and overlook the occasional plot hole, Veronica Mars is well-worth a binge, consistently delivering suspense, drama and entertainment.
