A spin-off from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Xena soon established itself as the superior show largely thanks to the warrior princess herself played by the fantastic Lucy Lawless.

The set-up itself is fairly simple. Having been given a second chance by Hercules Xena vows to change her ways and make amends for all the evil deeds she has committed. She is soon joined by bard, and eventual fellow warrior Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor). The pairs developing relationship is really the main focus of the show, Lawless and O'Connor have fantastic on screen chemistry, but virtually every character from God of War Ares to Xena’s nemesis Callisto is played brilliantly.

Some may try to dismiss the adventures of the Warrior Princess as silly nonsense but the creators appreciation of their audience always shone through and everything was done with tongue firmly in cheek. There are occasions in this first season where you can see that the creators where still trying to find their feet but this Xena was capable of being serious and moving one week and then all out farce the next making for a show that was as entertaining as anything else on TV.

If I were a 10-year-old, I'd bite anyone who tried to keep me away from an episode of Xena. For non-10-year-olds, though, the dialogue in Xena is a stitch.
