Had the plot paid this homage with wit and satire this may have been more interesting- instead it is a montage of predictable cliche that quickly wears thin faster than the recycled wisecracks uttered by your hero.
But what about the gameplay?
Well it's dull. The hardest difficulty truly is laughably easy for even the most casual FPS gamer and the main campaign can be completed in a couple of hours. This lack of content is filled by an "open-world" approach. Unfortunately this open world is distinguished by repetitive terrain (exposed hills, windy roads, water) with repetitive side missions (2 types- save hostage or kill animal) and repetitive enemies (6 types; blood dragon cyborg with either pistol, submachine gun, minigun, flamer, or molotov) on an unimaginative map (island with 4 identical sectors). Supposedly adding more depth to this is a collectible system where those with a completionist streak must wander the landscape one-shotting animals, and picking up TVs, notepads, VHS tapes etc. Collectibles and side mission will grant you access to weapon upgrades which will increase their power. These enhancements are superfluous for progressing the main story and entirely unnecessary for it's completion in the late stage- I'm avoiding the use of spoilers here but I mean "unnecessary" in the most literal sense possible. Finally if you thought the final boss in Aliens: Colonial Marines was an epic disappointment then you'll be even more surprised by this one!
Essentially this game plays like an ambitious mod by a small team. But such mods are meant as fun, and temporary, distractions from a bigger game. If you are looking for such a distraction, and are intrigued by the setting, then you may find Blood Dragon worthwhile for a few dollars on sale- just do not expect to find a complete and engrossing game. Personally, however, I believe better value can be found from among Steam's Indie selections.… Expand

COMBAT: Little has changed since diablo 2, this game is still a clickfest with very little tactical thought required to be successful. A similar experience can be had playing flash arcade games online. Don't expect DragonAge here.
RPG: No user control over looks or ability (i.e. skill point distribution). Role-players will find it difficult to form a connection with their chosen hero.
STORY: Standard dark fantasy fare. Consider the lore of Milton's "Paradise Lost" mixed with the simplicity of David Eddings' "The Belgariad" though without the charm of the latter. The few 3D animated cutscenes, however, are truly outstanding, though at a few minutes apiece they are noticeably sparse and your character will feature in none of them.
LOOT: Loot has always been the driving force behind players grinding out so many hours in diablo 1 and 2. Inventory management still constitutes a large portion of the gameplay as it did in its predecessors. The uniqueness of your character will be defined by their equipment.
GAME MECHANICS: Basically every class should use a weapon with fast attack speed and a shield with heavy armor. The item and damage mechanic makes any other combination or selection of weapon subpar. Fans of D&D-style systems will be horrified.
CHALLENGE: This is an easy game. The fact that one must play through the entire game repeatedly in order to reach more challenging difficulty levels was acceptable in 1998; in 2012 it is frustrating. If you're a seasoned gamer who starts every new game on high tier difficulty settings then it will be many hours before this game becomes challenging (even if you insist on soloing). The simple gameplay, however, does mean you can grind your way into hell or inferno modes with one hand and only partial attention if you are willing to put in the hours. COMMUNITY: Its early days yet and the US server community is still largely friendly and excitable. Ages vary considerably. Chat channels and party management systems are very dated. Spamming from gold services is already significant in chat (blocking communication or reporting is, to date, ineffective)
SUPPORT: Random "scheduled" server maintenance, almost daily (for up to 8hrs), has marred the early experience of many gamers. Adding to their ire is the requirement to connect to server in order to play singleplayer. For Oceania gamers server downtime will happen in your peak playtimes if on the US server.
