It's a slap in the face to all of us how many bugs we've reported that have taken so long to fix, how long they've left known issues unannounced, and how little attention they've given the support of supposedly supported graphics cards. Inconsistant design elements, such as a single quest sometimes counting goals for the group and others demanding each individual carry them out, are constant immersion-breakers. The beta of this game was actually quite a lot better than the release version, sadly. The simple beauty of the basic world design is spoiled by so many filters, you'd think they were made of pure cowbell. Turn one way or another in the game world and things could turn green, or blue, or black and white, or distorted. Everything, it seems, can be improved with MOAR FILTERS!!! Hokey fight sounds, grunts and screams, are cringe-worthy in the somber Lovecraftian setting. They also fly in the face of a choice not to voice the main character, supposedly to let the user define their reactions. Finicky, frustrating movement puzzles are made tedious by bugs and terrain design problems, and a mistaken idea that people enjoy attempting the same jumps over and over because a minute reflex deficit or an FPS drop-- far too common in this game-- sent them back to the beginning. Just to make sure it isn't something that might become relaxed and fun, there are timers, yay! Tedium and tension seem to be the goal. The worst choice, however, was the one to make so many puzzles environmentally dependant while failing to properly gate simultaneous action. Many proximity triggers-- which are annoyingly routine in the game-- will fail if two people walk up to them simultaneously, which in an MMO, happens a LOT. No matter how many times we point that out, they don't change. This kind of group-busting activity happens too often in the game, sometimes even splitting groups off into solo instances mid-quest. It's very frustrating for people who use MMOs to spend extra time with friends.
I want this game to succeed, but I want it to be fixed first. I think adding new content without fixing the problems is a slap in the face to everybody who supports this game and endures the problems. They need to get their act together before I can give them a good score.
3 points for good writing and some good characters-- when you can actually see the animations smoothly, when their faces move properly, and they aren't bugged by being rendered live rather than being rendered beforehand as proper cutscenes. Very sad that the anatomy and general appearance of the so-called 'cinematic' cutscenes is so grossly off the mark, considering their extensive use of motion capture. All in all, give it a miss until they clean up their act.… Expand

As a Season Pass pre-purchaser, I am just disgusted by the way they treated the title. It started out as stupid fun, and ended up just plain stupid. Trouble With Clones was downright irritating, and the narrator for the missions was so irritating I really just wanted a good opportunity to set him on fire. I had tons of incendiery weapons at the ready as soon as the opportunity arose. This final chapter of the Season Pass DLC, such as they were, just put the cherry on top of a sh** sundae that convinced me that from now on, I'm better off sticking with the base game when dealing with Volition. I might check out SR4, if I can forget how these expansions soured my feelings toward the game. Maybe.
Seriously, don't bother with this expansion. It doesn't offer you the opportunity to restore what's lost in the first game. It just offers you the opportunity to torment the loss a little more, and drag a little more of the game's past into the mangling. Beating a dead horse has nothing on this for pointless tedium and exhausted premises.… Expand

Customization is a joke. The bugs are numerous, the controls are hideous, the tutorials are nonexistant, and all in all, it was just a waste of money. It was embarassing to find out what I'd given as a gift to a sports-happy friend turned out to be so abysmally poor, and I blame gaming journalism for that, as I checked it out on several game sites before buying. Some of those sites have since adjusted their reviews to better reflect reality-- not that it helped me. This would have been embarassing as a game 10 years ago. Today, it's just inexcusable.… Expand

The beauty of Dear Esther is that part of the narrative must come from the player... impressions formed in the art, exploration of the countryside. It is up to you how much of this story you will experience, how far into the depths of its fever-dreams you will wade. Will you struggle to interpret what is scrawled upon the ground, etched into the hills, carved like lines of white chalk that alienate all help even as they cry distress? How much empathy will you feel, and for whom, and what will you make of the person whose voice comes echoing through your head, whispering to you to come back when you wander too far? How will you interpret a world which all at once gives you its narrative and yet leaves you with all the options as to what any of it means? I played Dear Esther with my partner, and I recommend doing that, because we discussed what we saw along the way, reacted to the narrator, and the experience each of us drew from the game was tinted by our own backgrounds, our own points of reference. Where I saw chemistry, she saw art, where I saw delirium, she saw verse. Together we made it something even more-- and when we've had time for the memory to fade, when the chalk lines etched across our brains have grown over and been erased, we'll walk again along that shore and perhaps take a different path, perhaps feel another way, or perhaps relive our first discovery. We will haunt that beach, now and then, and to me, that is enough, especially for the price. But, I cannot give it a perfect score when it is somewhat inaccessible and I wish it would have yielded up just a little bit more.… Expand

But the DLC for SR3 has actually made it progressively worse, as a Season Pass holder I've had the experience more or less soured by some of this garbage. (Trouble with Clones is a worse offender by far, but I got really tired of Gangstas in Space early on and wished it hadn't happened.) Co-op play isn't really well planned out in this expansion, which is a let-down because it's generally pretty good in the base game, bugs and lag aside. As with Genkibowl, there are situations in which the division of responsibility for co-op just doesn't make sense, especially with vehicles involved.
I was expecting camp from Gangstas in Space, fine. No problem with the cheese factor itself. I mean, the glimpses you get into the project along the way playing the base game don't exactly raise high hopes. Camp is fine. But this didn't rise to the cleverness of camp. Strangling out a few really tired premise-based jokes, working them raw until they finally yield up a climax of utterly predictable and ultimately unsatisfying moments... well, as a woman, I can get that for nothing and drink free doing it, thanks. I expect better from Saint's Row. I daresay I got more entertainment out of Insurance Fraud than I've gotten out of the entire Season Pass. Makes me want to get crazy-eyes on the guy who thought doing DLC on the cheap and quick like this was a good idea in the first place. Make it longer. Better plans. And more time in tests. That's better than bigger, faster, and more intense-- especially when that intensity is being spent on the struggle with disappointment. Volition-- you'll never get a prepayment from me again based on this experience, and forget add-ons for sure. Not till you get your sh** together and deliver something that says you've started taking pride in your work again. Because Gangstas in Space? Definitely not that.… Expand

Completing a level won't even guarantee you a new cut scene, the same sequences keep repeating. Even if they hadn't alienated me with the bait-and-switch they initially tried to pull with their DRM (the game still requires you create an Uplay account, and even after getting rid of the game I can't get rid of the Uplay account) I still would have been disappointed by this game. It looked so beautiful and had so much potential that I pre-ordered it despite not trusting Ubisoft. With the lying they did before and after their DRM scheme was revealed, I will never again grant Ubisoft the benefit of the doubt on ANYTHING. Last. Ubisoft. Purchase. Ever.… Expand

Several of the regular activities have been genki-fied, which would be nice, if they'd put nearly the kind of effort into these DLC activities that they did into the activities included in the base game.
The biggest let-down was "Apocalypse Genki", the jungle-themed S.E.R.C. successor. It seems like so much time and effort for only two short levels. To compare, the original S.E.R.C. has six instances. The only non-repackaged activity was Sad Panda Skydiving, and to be honest, it doesn't seem very well thought through. The mascots you're supposed to kill with a melee weapon tend to run into the trigger effect of over-sensitive cannons that will shoot you into the sky if you get too close, balloons aren't that useful and the sum total just isn't that much fun. And that's from someone who's already gotten all but one of the Sad Panda achievements in just three runs. Even when I'm doing great at it, it's just not something I'd prefer to do.
All in all I'm not feeling great about having bought the season pass, and I won't be pre-ordering anything from Volition or THQ anytime soon based on the hype to actual product ratio.… Expand

You can use it because you're too lazy to run down a hall, you can use it to dump your enemies onto one another, you can bypass whole swaths of the map simply because you spotted a clean surface to work with. The curious thing is, while Portal 2 seems to want to bust you out of the chamber-to-chamber mode of thinking, the gameplay itself is often far more restrictive. There are times when the only portable surfaces are the ones critical to the solution, and that just takes the fun out of finding them. The gels alleviate this plight after a while, but, I still would have liked to see more flexibility. Even if it means I fall into space once in a while because I've chosen the wrong bit of the ceiling and wasn't thinking with both portals ;) Co-op mode was so much better, especially since we could juggle one another, fling one another into space, and generally cause incredible mayhem for one another when we felt rambunctious. We really had to work and think together, and that made this game brilliant. The free DLC made it even better, and I want tons more co-op missions for this game. The co-op story was a bit disappointing, but, the missions themselves more than made up for it. We can't get enough of Science!… Expand

We had a little trouble getting connected at first because we used the game through Steam and our co-op IDs had to match our Steam IDs, something it doesn't tell you but that in retrospect should have been obvious I guess :D There was a nice mixture of difficulty and teamwork, although some of the gameplay gets a bit repetitive. My only real complaint was that we finished it far too quickly, I wanted there to be more. The player-versus-player element wasn't bad, wasn't fantastic, but PVP has never been my thing. As co-op players we could protect each other, work together, and generally maximize our fun together, and that's really all I ask for in a game.… Expand

I want to like you, I really do. But you do not design a learning curve so much as a learning cliff. I didn't even pay attention to who made this game, but I was keenly aware a few missions in. The overwhelming cost of everything, the slow time to execute it. and the stress factor are hallmark for me of Kalypso games. It's not that I can't beat them-- I can, and I did beat this one. It's that it's not fun. When I'm done, I save and quit with the feeling of, "Ugh, glad that's over." When I've beaten the game, I don't come away from it feeling as though a second play-through would be easier, or more fun. I'm just glad to put it away and never think of it again.
MUD TV was such a fantastic premise, it didn't need this treatment. It's worse to see what could have been a fantastically fun play experience converted into a stressful, backed-into-a-corner pressure-fest. It's frustrating to see so many possibilities in a game and see them all killed by the drudgery of someone else's idea of what makes for a challenge. Click something a little too slow, or just hit a stretch of bad luck, and you're so far underwater you might as well start over. It's drudgery where there should be magic.
Note to Kalypso: I already have a job. I don't need to buy another to do in my leisure time. Design with that in mind, and give people the option of a relaxed mode that actually IS relaxed. Not super-easy. Just flexible and possible to recover from a mistake. Games are best when they're relaxing.… Expand
