I recently took a liking to 4X games, especially space-themed ones, and this is what I really loved. If you're new to the 4X genre, or even a hardened veteran, you /should/ like this game. The graphics and general look of it is fantastic. The interface isn't cluttered, and relatively easy to grasp after the tutorial. The tech trees are quite interesting, but it seemed to me with enough science production, the colonization tree was the easiest to gain a 'technology' win, after building the wonders that are unlocked via the last technology. Maybe that was just me, being Sophons (I think.).
But it seems a lot of emphasis is placed on three things. One, your dust production, two, your 'building'/production production, and three, your ships. I don't know if I was a bad ship designer or what, but it seemed the enemy /always/ had better combat strength than me, and I had to build an armada of ships every time I went to war. Dust production plagued me throughout games, even when I put all emphasis on dust production and improvements, I still was struggling on the net gain of dust. Building/production was rather easy to obtain being the Sophons, and really it's the basis for everything in the game. Slightly OP, if you have a high building rate. You can build everything faster, improvements and ships, so you have a bigger edge. Then again, that might have been me. The game itself is really good in terms of mechanics, it's really smooth until you start exploring a large galaxy and end up waiting for a bit for other players'/AIs ships to move, but that's to be expected. The ship building was pretty interesting too. The only thing I rate this down from a 10 is the combat. Although the card-based combat is okay, I'd really prefer a RTS combat-style, so I can really see how useful those things I put on my ships are. It's not gamebreaking, unless you are the kind of person who just attacks everyone and wants to exterminate the universe. Although that is one of the 4 Xs, I tend to stick to more technology/diplomatic victories. Although having an armada of dreadnoughts helps too! Brilliant game, I love it.… Expand

The new look is very snappy, the various modes they've added are pretty interesting, but the driving mechanics seem to have improved to be more realistic. I can't tell you how many times I've spun out or not braked hard/soon enough to be able to avoid running off the track. The traction of cars seems to be improved, in the sense that if you're not careful it's easier to spin out. However the things that prevent this game from getting a 10 in my book are the AI, and the bugs. The AI are still pretty much the same as 2011, trying to overtake on very short straights before having to swerve back behind you because they MUST take the racing line into the corner. They should be able to try and overtake properly on corners by cutting inside or going around the outside, not sticking to the racing line the entire race. The bugs were something else, the one bug where after a flashback your engine would immediately blow out, not due to you racing around the track in first and over-revving the engine so much, but for some unknown reason. Also sometimes after a flashback, in the final 'stage' of the flashback, the game freezes for a short period before resuming. It's annoying, and I hope Codemasters works it out. But yes, definitely a great racing game, definitely go for it if you're an F1 fan.… Expand

I pre-ordered it on steam, and when it finally came out I was so hyped, I couldn't get home quick enough to start playing.
Except I couldn't.
Because the launch was so bug-filled it took several days to work out the problems with my ATI card, which at the time (HD 6970) was one of the best ATIs on the market. But alas, the problems plagued it.
When I finally managed to get onto the game, again, the textures kept popping, screen tearing even with VSync on, etc. It was terrible.
I think I left the game for a while, waited for a big patch or two, then came back to it eagerly. The first two-three hours of gameplay were quite enjoyable, but quickly I began to tire. The same repetitive scenes with repetitive enemies were boring, I expected a more open-world sort of thing, like Borderlands, instead of the enclosed canyon walls. If there is more than that, I didn't get up to that because I never finished the game.
The weapons were another thing that annoyed me. Although I did love the wingstick, and the grenades/throwing items in general were cool, the shooting element was terrible. The assault rifle was terrible. It took damn near two magazines to kill someone! Although it /may/ have been some bad marksmanship on my part, it still took ages to kill people. The driving was a decent element, the races were pretty fun half the time, I guess. The crafting element was interesting too.
But overall, it could have been a much better game. The gameplay was repetitive and got boring very quickly, plagued by graphics problems, and even now I think my card struggles slightly due to bad optimization. The only thing that prevents me from rating this a solid 0 is the fact it's a decent attempt, some parts of the game are fun, although the story had me completely lost very quickly. Although the post-apocalyptic genre/theme has a lot of scope and if pulled off correctly, could become a fantastic game comparable to legends like Fallout, and Borderlands, but RAGE doesn't come close.
I expected much more, iD.… Expand
