The trailer seemed so great : a philosophic reflection conjugated to an apocalypse ; and James d'Arcy, an actor I find very interesting... Well, it seemed to be a film for me. NOT AT ALL !!! And the worst in this : there was a real potential. The special effects are good, the cast is approximately correct (even if some lines are really bad acted), and the story IS really good. It's just a movie with great possibilities which made all the bad choices and it gives us something very disgusting.
There are so many questions raised that, from the beginning, we look forward to the end. Average spectator, don't make this fatal error: you must expect anything of this movie! This movie will bring you no answer, will make that to raise of new questions which lead to nothing and will have one of the most hopeless ending I ever seen!
This end is so much disappointing that it is not even necessary to check the box "spoilers": we understand nothing, the characters are flat, not only once we understand their motivations and the editing would have been able to be interesting if the editor had the slightest information concerning the movie!
In short, this movie gives the impression of having been realized by several teams, which communicated between them at no time. Then, we assembled the various pieces, we stuck a rough music above and here is After-party the Dark!!
PS: I am French, please, indulgence for the mistakes!… Expand

Of course, it's not the smartest movie I've ever seen, and the story's not particularly interesting. It's just a movie to watch when you don't want to think about anything. But a good story is rarely made of common events.
1. This is a movie about Music. It's not a matter of mysticism or things like that : it's a matter of faith. Someone believe that the music has a power, someone don't. It's like a religion, everyone has the right to believe in what he choose to believe.
2. There is a brilliant cast : I considerate Freddie Highmore as one the best boy-actor. Jonathan Rhys-Meyer is excellent, too, and he has a beautiful voice (perfect for the role). Keri Russell and Robin Williams are very different but both are heart-moving, in a different way.
3. We are very attached to those characters : the little prodigy of the music ; the guitarist, wasting his life with an other woman ; the cellist, who can't play anymore ; even the manipulator who just want to make money with children is captivating !
4. Some themes in this movie are beyond all description !! And I think it's not a movie about ONE thing, only : it's a friendship movie ; a romance ; a movie about music...
And if the message is that there is something about us who guides us, it's not a "pseudo-mysticism" movie, for all that. It's... well... like an other religion !!… Expand

I loved this relation father/son and the lesson that we can learn : yes, maybe the stories told by your parents were not true... But it's not the most important. So ? What happened ? The 3D is useless, the picture is often illegible. The set smells the green screen and the numeric with full nose. And, I know a movie can be brilliant without respecting the work of origin but : Legolas ? Seriously ? What the hell is he doing there if it's not to make a useless allusion to Lord of the Rings...
To my mind, here is that is that movie : a far too long useless allusion to Lord of the Rings, a work which suffered from the Peter Jackson's numerical megalomania for, in the final, a result close to the disgusting.
Without forgetting the useless sub-plots added to the screenplay (an emancipation towards the book, okay, why not, but from there to change all the weft it...) ; some strokes of humour which completely fall flat ; the completely ridiculous look of the dwarfs and, naturally, unspeakable campaign of communication and advertisement made around films (planes, immense sculptures in stations and.), amounting to a degree of nonsense which exceeds the imagination !!

But, on the other hand, some details are disturbing :
At the beginning, I thought that it was a movie AGAINST new technologies, and the abuses to which they can bring... But, ultimately, we discover that it is, in fact, a pro-technology movie. Okay, it's for the planet's protection, for the environment, for the peace in the world.... But Johnny Depp/computer raised an army of "robots" ; he hid the truth to his wife. Until the last minutes of the movie, the director wants to make us take a stand against this "aberration" and, suddenly : "Whoa, it's wonderful, Johnny Depp was in fact a good small merciless machine !!"… Expand
