The series first appeared on the Nintendo entertainment system in the U.S. And on the Famicom entertainment system in Japan . The first metal gear game was a technical marvel back then . The game allowed you to do many things that were not possible before .
This series is truly special and holds a place in my heart . Before I begin my review of the phantom pain I'll tell you why . My father hated video games . He deemed them to be mindless and wastes of time . My father was a career military man . He was very strict and did not screw around . One night after attending a church group with neighbors I came home late . He didn't hear me come in the house ( I guess that metal gear stealth training paid off ) I walked out into the family room , and there was my dad . Perched in front of the TV NES controller in hand playing metal gear . I stood there and watched him for a couple minutes . He was having a lot of fun . I then said what are you doing ?. He hurriedly rushed and turned off the system . Unfortunately a few years later he passed .
So now you know why this series is so special to me . It was a few years before I played metal gear solid on the playstation . I also played MGS2 MGS3 and 4 as well as VR missions . So basically I'm a metal gear veteran . I will not be revealing story or any kind of spoilers as you will want to experience it all yourself . Let me say this , just the prologue to this game is mind boggling and jaw dropping . Some of the most tense moments in gaming history are there . As I said I do not want to spoil it but it is nothing short of amazing .
Presentation . The presentation on display here is simply astounding . The detail and love put into this game really shine through . The voice acting is top notch the animation is just ridiculously good . Sound and music are absolutely phenomenal. Graphically nothing else touches this game and as stated earlie the sound is great play with a good set of cans on .
Gameplay . The gameplay is deep , varried and polished . It's simply a joy to play through this title . Whether traveling on foot , by steed, chopper or bipedal mech there is always a ton to see and do . The depth on display here is staggering and your options on how you approach combat or the lack thereof is simply staggering . While I would say that MGS4 had more fan service moments Phantom Pain still shines brighter . As for cutscenes Kojima is famous for them . So instead of doing away with them completely he's made you the star of them . The transition from cutscenes to gameplay is indiscernible and is absolutely seamless . The control scheme is excellent though if you're a hardcore metal gear fan it may throw you off just a little nothing terrible though . Combat is smooth and satisfying to say the least . You can upgrade your soldier and Mother Base (your staging area ) to your hearts content . Netting you some pretty sweet rewards .
Again the prolougue is one of the best moments I've ever experienced in gaming and I'm an old man . It rivals that of GTA5 and the Last Of Us that is really saying something . A legendary gaming series got the retirement it deserved it truly sucks that Konami and Kojima will be going their separate ways . One more thing I'd like to mention . There was a young man during development of the title who received a cancer diagnosis . The young man was a California resident and by my understanding an outstanding young man . Unfortunately he was very very ill . This young man wrote letters to Hideo offering his messages of excitement love and support for one of his favorite series in gaming . Hideo sent him all kinds of autographed collectables and even made him an honorary member of the design team . Saying Sean's messages of support helped motivate the team to produce this masterpiece . Unfortunately Sean passed away before release . Video games don't often have the kind of power to transcend barriers in that capacity . This is something truly special . It's not a game it's a work of art , a work of love , and a thank you to all us fans from not only a great gaming mind but a true gentleman and honorable man . So Hideo and Konami the divorce is final but thanks for all the truly special memories I salute you both rest easy snake you've earned it your 28!year TDY is over honorable discharge :)… Expand

On the south side of Chicago there was a bowling alley where my friends and I would go after school . We'd go play pool bowl and talk to girls . The bowling alley also had a tiny arcade . It was nothing special . Let's put it this way they had pole position . Older gamers will surely appreciate that last bit ,
One day while bowling we noticed a line emanating from that tiny "arcade " . We wandered over for a look upon getting getting closer we were greeted with the sounds of martial arts combat . It called to us like sirens to sailors . The yells the sounds of punches landing and scorpions iconic Get Over Here ! We were amazed . The special moves, combat ways for people to juggle . The fighters looked real !! ( at least to us ) . The blood and then we saw the fatalities .
We were hooked older people and teenagers like us lined up to compete against each other . Winner stayed loser walked . It was an amazing arcade game and it became a hit . A few years later the Chicago company Midway released MK2 . This time the arcade cabinet was in a video store . Some of you are saying what the hell is a video store ?. It was closer to our school than the alley so everyday after school we'd go .
Pumping in quarters and spending hours trying to master the game . We wanted to find all the secrets , learn all the moves and perform all the fatalities . In those days the net was in its infancy so there were tons of rumors surrounding this game . A little later a home port was released . Ironically the same video store that took our quarters declined to carry the console version . I wasn't supposed to play these games but I did anyway and got caught . Shortly after my love affair with MK ended and I was on my way to becoming that old guy who yells at you to get off his lawn .
Flash forward 20 something years and once again I'm answering MK's beckoning call . Let's start with the story . The story is of course ridiculous and the dialogue is campy . In a good way ( think Big Trouble In Little China ) . The story shifts between time periods and locations is enjoyable . Many of the Kombatants are here , though some fan favorites are absent . There is lots of fan service here and it shows . Let's face it most fighters have no story so being a MK fan I was happy .
Other modes are present here as well . Like the challenge towers . These can either be played online or off and either way offer a lot of fun . Some towers are updated daily or evenly with rewards for completing them . Within Mortal Kombat x is a mini game based on factions . You are asked to chose one and everything you do in game contributes to your faction . Earning you rewards like faction fatalities and so on . Players across all platforms including mobile contribute to factions . Speaking of mobile app which is only available on iOS devices at the moment . Nets you rewards like costumes etc . Plus it's free .
Online modes also feature towers . As well as 1 on 1 vs and team matches . As well as king of the hill which has that classic arcade community feel I spoke of earlier . There's simply tons of content here . From costumes to finishers to combos . The in game kurrency is used in the crypt . Unlocking things like fatalities concept art brutalities and so on .
Some may be disappointed their favorite fighters are missing . Keep faith Its MK . This game brings back that classic nostalgia and feel for me in droves . Mortal Kombat pretty much solidified me to being a gamer and though I have strayed away I returned . Should you return to the arena of Mortal Kombat ?. I do not know but if you do you'll see me online with a big smile on my face and I'm sure one will be on yours as well . The hometown boys at Netherrealm have an absolute gem of a fighter on their hands . They have come full circle and for resurrecting this classic series in such a quality and entertaining way they deserve some kudos . Not only is MK x a great fighter it's a great game . In other words a flawless victory .… Expand

Imagine a world filled with oppression , punishment , horrifying sights and sounds . Mixed within is a strange beauty . Make no mistake bloodborne is beautiful . This world entices you and sucks you in completely . The combat at first seemed unsatisfying but once you get the hang of it is fantastic . Enemies in this game are some of the best designed I have ever seen . From the attacks they perform to the sheer variety .
Bloodborne will not hold your hand and will teach you very little . It pretty much leaves you to your own devices . In the early hours it helps to grind a little bit and level up your chrachter . I've encounterd three bosses so far . When you fell these bosses you feel a sense of both accomplishment and relief . There is no question that bloodborne is for the hardcore gamer . You pretty much aren't safe anywhere except locations marked by lanterns which transport you to hunters dream ( similar to souls bonfires ) .
Is this better than dark souls ?. I do not know and those who claim to know are fools . Is the influence of Dark Souls present absolutely . However albeit with an entirely different ambience and setting . Parts of bloodborne will unsettle you . It is my opinion the game should come with a warning label as it features plenty of tense moments .
This is a difficult game . It was designed that way and from knows their audience very well . The art design and sound are fantastic . There are a wealth of options when creating your chrachter . Tons of weapons to equip and side quests . When you encounter a friendly npc who wishes to help you it can be an awe inspiring and memorable moment .
This game is packed to the brim with content and features a new game plus option as well . The influence of some of the best games ever are felt here and bloodborne seeks to go beyond them . How you approach many situations is up to you . There is a whole lot to explore here .
One can't help but think of The Divine Comedy when playing bloodborne . The tone , the sights , the atmosphere it's all very unsettling . Yet oddly beautiful . The architecture and how it all connects is absolutely some of the best level design I have ever seen . Much like The Divine Comedy bloodborne will be considered a masterpiece . A tapestry of excellence interwoven with an outstanding about of effort and it shows . Bloodborne a macabre masterpiece a truly harrowing achievement . In my humble opinion it is the crown jewel of the from software collection . While writing this review all I could think of was playing again an extremely rare occurrence from me .
If you have the will , the fortitude and a ps4 you need to pick this up . As it truly is one of those sprawling epic pieces of art that only appear once in a blue moon . Bloodborne is both a love letter to survival horror and the RPG . When you combine those two things with the talent at from you get bloodborne and man am I glad I got it .… Expand

I put in a couple hundred hours on battlefield 4 and loved every minute of it ( when it worked ) . This is battlefield alright . Battlefield for folks with ADD . Yes the single player is better than that of titles past . This however isn't saying much . Video Games are governed by a ratings system . The level of violence pretty much guarantees this game a mature rating . That being said knowing the game will be played by an older audience do they make a hard boiled in your face "cop drama " as was billed ?.
Nope the developers and their crack ( or cracked out team of writers ?) go the network television safe route and manage to make the crappy writing seen on those shows seem like Pulitzer prize winning stuff compared to the consulted asinine crap you'll be exposed to here . Video games have far more lenient standards than tv does . They could have made this truly special . Instead they made a steaming pile of cow dung .
Everybody knows battlefield games are known for their multiplayer . Fear not though as visceral has managed to screw that up as well . Remember how in BF4 , if someone was playing junior bird man all you had to do was get a stinger and shoot them down ?. Someone there made the excellent decision to keep aircraft in the game but give you nothing to neutralize them with . Now that is stellar game design . Remember the tanks in bf4 ?. Remember how you had mines and at launchers to neutralize the threat?. Don't worry because visceral has replaced them with " command vehicles " . To destroy them all you have to do is run up to them and place a breaching charge on them . All while you're getting lit up the whole time trying to approach the damn thing . You could take cover if there was cover present and the levels weren't as barren as the saharra .
Now let's talk hit detection . I have been playing shooters many years. Without aim assist and my accuracy usually is in the 40 percentile range . This is the first game I've ever used a shotgun that should tell you what you need to know .
If you have battlefield 4 that game is running perfectly at the moment I suggest you keep playing that . The greatest thing about battlefield games ? . Destructible environments . Remember people camping structures ?. How would you handle that ?. Usually by anti tank weapons and c4 turning the building to rubble right ?. Well visceral in their infinite wisdom decided to remove those options from you as well . It's okay though cuz look bullets make holes in things !!!! Gee I'm impressed .
This game is complete garbage and it plays like it . Any user giving this game high marks is on their daily 800 milligrams of adderall . This is complete garbage and very much a cash grab dressed up as reviloutionary gameplay changes in the single player .
On a completely separate subject . Let's talk about all bleeding heart professional reviewers saying this game is making a statement about police in this country . That Is crap this game played it safe and made no statement at all . I live in one of the most violent cities in America and am a police officer . If you want to know what it's like or think we are all out to hurt people , I invite you to wear the star . Just for a day you have no idea . For the police haters out there next time you're in trouble call a crackhead .
This is not battlefield and I will not let visceral disparage the name of this great series . This game belongs in a bargain bin or better yet should have never seen the light of day . I'd rather shoot myself in the face with a large caliber handgun than play this tripe ever again .… Expand

I am an older gamer . Now I don't mean to bore you with I walked 2 miles in snow type of stories . Video games were way harder in those days . Now most games take the player by the hand these days . Alien Isolation is a hard game . It's very clear from the start this is this is an homage to Mr . Scott's films . As well as Mr. Cameron's . Albeit in a more covert manner . It is also a love letter . Not only to alien fans but also to those of survival horror as well .
The story is pretty good . It's obvious where this game draws its inspiration . I personally love when a devoloper embraces the source material . Yet refuses to compromise its vision . The game has a very clean minimal interface . Allowing for a more cinematic presentation and feel . This game is an homage to the alien film and is essentially a companion piece . As such I would recommend watching the film before playing the game . If only to give you a better appreciation and understanding of the universe you are going to be playing in .
This is a very old school game . It took years to develop the developers took their time. As such they want you to take your time with it . Play it on hard and in the correct manner and you are in for experience . Alien is very old school . Checkpoints ?. Nope extremely rare . Manual save points are spread throughout the game in the form of phones . Ratcheting up the anxiety you are not safe anywhere even while saving . Which brings me to the AI. Of the alien itself .
Throw everything out the window and take the conventions learned from other games and forget them . They will not help you here . Think you can sit in a corner and figure out patrol routes nope the alien will find you . Think you can run away ?. Guess again the alien is an amazing athlete . Covering 40 yards quicker than megatron . Think you could hide in that locker ?. Well if you're in there too long the alien will find you . This is not the only danger on this station . There are several human bandits aboard the ship as well as working joe androids . This is a stealth game and combat is to be avoided . This is a stealth game after all . Making noise is almost always a bad idea . Do not run that's the best advice I can give .
The art design and sound design of this game are stellar . The game is best played in the dark with a good set of cans . The alien is not the only threat aboard this ship . Usually you can tell where the alien is by sound . However all that goes out the window as some objectives sound alarms which will surely attract your new friend . It's in moments like these isolation shines brighter . As the alarms rage and smoke and fog fill your vision you will need to think quick to survive .
Alien isolation is an uncompromising vision . This is the best alien game ever made and definitely one of the finest most unique survival horror titles ever . If played properly you are in for a real treat . Now obviously this game won't appeal to everyone but those aching for a truly different game pick this up . Play the game on hard and you are in for a compelling and rewarding experience you won't soon forget . It'll leave you frazzled and shaking in your little space boots .… Expand

I found myself thinking do these developers ever even watch a hockey game Apparently in Vancouver they think the Blackhawks still play in Chicago stadium This is no small feat considering that venue is gone It's been rubble for over 20 years The commentary is redundant and in many cases recycled from nhl 13 Nothing says effort quite like that .
The gameplay is terrible as well Everybody pretty much is a big hitter now It's that whole dumbing things down aspect I mentioned earlier Ridiculous things will happen It's unnecessarily difficult to win a face off now Even with slider adjustments the game doesn't feel right It feels as if EA is cramming the style of "hockey they want you to play down your throat Rosters are inaccurate sliders are pretty much ineffective .
Now let's talk about the elephant in the room here The biggest problem is there is no competition EA knows nobody else makes hockey games So they are content giving us the same nonsense every year Slapping a new face on the box but shipping the same game as last year I for one am sick of this In other industries such things would be called a monopoly not so in the gaming industry Hopefully with a new generation of hardware a little friendly competition will emerge I dream that one day a hockey game will be made Made by people who are as passionate about the sport as we are I give this game a 3 If you own NHl 13 don't buy this Play until they shut the servers down and save your money You aren't missing much it's the same game as last year … Expand
