Average User Score: 7.5Jul 22, 2014Wow! I'm actually angered that people are comparing this to the likes of Super Meat Boy. This game doesn't even deserves to drink the meat drippings left behind. This game is an overly bloated pile. I love 2D platformers, and for people to give this a 10, it's just a bad move. Get ShovelKnight and save our money. Castle Crashers was a deeply rich and amazingly fun game, this game is not. It's like a crap follow up to an epic album. The "platformer" feels wonky and it's just boring... very very boring. I made these thoughts in a Steam forum and I had a few people get mad at me, and even someone from the company addressed my concerns. I remember back when this game was in development way back in the day.... even bought a shirt... now that shirt will go to the Goodwill. Behemoth is better than this, this is a huge letdown. It tries to be funny, it's not... the characters have no soul and the story is incredibly uninteresting. Drop your Ambien and play this game instead if sleep is something you need.… Expand
Average User Score: 8.3Jan 25, 2014Wow! I was very disappointed in this game, and I'll KOF one thing, it has a major hardcore audience that will despise you should you say anything negative about it.
I love SNK and NeoGeo. I've played every game on the NeoGeo and I'm a huge fanboy of all things SNK. I'm not a fan of SNK Playmore... specifically the console they released with inferior emulation. My favorite NeoGeo games are Last Blade series, Fatal Fury Wolves, and yes KOF pre-2000s.
The fighting part of the game... the graphics are retro and are just bloody gorgeous. Probably the best looking graphics you'll find in a 2D fighting game. The sprites aren't overly clean like a drawing, they have pixelated qualities in a good way... it feels very arcade like. The animations are equally gorgeous and the controls in pulling of the moves are satisfying.
What's wrong? The game is retro but the UI/menus are just plain ugly and over-the-top. There are so many menus and sub-screens that I felt like that was the game not the actual game itself. It's overly saturated with UI garbage and it gets in the way. The game also has overly stylized cut scenes that are incredibly long, boring and don't feel like they belong.
The controls in terms of how they've used the 360 controller with the game is pathetic. Low Kick and High Kick are the buttons you use to select and deselect in the UI. Should you put those buttons on the triggers of your controller like I did, it can be awkward. Also the buttons per the controller are not shown... so instead of Y = High Kick... it'll just say HK. Plus there are other buttons that beyond 6 buttons that you'll have to put throughout the controller... also you'll have to forfeit a button combination because there aren't enough buttons on the controller. That being said, try the tutorial and try remember where you mapped HP+HK when they call for it because you'lll get no reference as to what button on the controller it is. Other games do show what button you use, so it's not because it's a Steam game.
I had bought the game months after it's release. NOBODY was in online mode. The only online people I could find were in ranked matches and ALL of them were very high ranked... so the fun is sucked out as you try to build your rank... since there's about 10 people playing the game with high ranks.
If you want to jump into a quick game, have fun jumping through a million menus, sub menus first... then play for a minute to then have to repeat again.
If the menu aspect was subtracted or reduced, this game could be much higher. It's hard to look past because the game feels overly done for such a simple fighting game.… Expand
Average User Score: 6.1Jan 25, 2014Rust is the closest thing to real life that you'd get if you dropped a bunch of guys off on an deserted island. Your personality goes a long way... if you run into someone who's cool and helps you out, it feels good... if you run into someone who KOS then it infuriates you, especially if they had nothing to gain... then you'll find people who betray you after being by your side for a good while.
Starting off naked you earn everything you use... down to medical supplies, food, clothing, and weapons. So when you earn these weapons you appreciate them, and you tread lightly.. which is another pro about this game you'll likely if ever experience anyone running and gunning. There is too much to lose.
The greatest satisfaction is building your house and living in it, getting supplies running into weirdos and some cool people. Rust is the most authentic social experience you'll get in a game.
Within a week of playing it the graphics drastically improved. Some reviews people had issue with the graphics, the graphics look fantastic and some models and animations are still in development.
I once met a group of 5 guys and we had a campfire and cooked food and held it down at night as people passed through camp. I felt like I was actually camping... cool experience.
Hackers suck. When you launch the game you get a huge warning of hacking and if caught you'll be kicked off the servers forever. Yet, the game is littered with hackers and they aren't shy about admitting it. Some can walk through walls, jump high, speed run, and auto-aim kill from 100 miles away. Keep telling yourself it's an Alpha and pray it gets better.
I must say I've been playing games since the Atari 2600 and even in Alpha, I'd say that Rust is my most favorite game I've played.… Expand
Average User Score: 7.9Jan 8, 2014This game didn't speak to me. I love Shank, and the second was OK. Thought I'd give this a try.... think a Shank-ish looking game with stealth sounds amazing. The idea, preview movies, and reviews shouted a masterpiece... but it's mundane and boring stealth game. If the levels were designed in a way to really utilize the need for being stealthy, then perhaps it might work; but, the levels design lacked interested scenarios begging for stealthy tactics. The way the character felt when maneuvering didn't feel satisfying like Shank did. The bad guys were very easy to kill... out of boredom you might try to rush a kill to get some fun. The build-up of hiding and getting spotted is lacking (maybe because it's a 2D game).… Expand
Average User Score: 8.8Jan 8, 2014Wow! I was expecting a little more, or maybe all the high scores gave me the impression of something grander. I love indie games, platform and Metroidvania games. I was bored with this game. I had a hard time getting into it... everything about it is sleepy... and nothing urged me to want to play, it didn't capture my attention or imagination. Don't play this at night, because it's a great sleeping pill.… Expand
Average User Score: 8.6Jan 5, 2014Artistic masterpiece. Some may not like the game being "easy"... but, it's an incredible ride. Most fun I've had in a videogame in a long time. I found myself seeking cliches and game mechanics of other games... and gladly I wasn't satiated. This is a very unique experience, and the art direction, atmosphere... all of it. Wow! I'd love to play a sequel. Also, the voice acting (although a different language) and music is very well done.… Expand
Average User Score: 7.3Jan 2, 2014Love it! Shadow Complex meets Super Meat Boy. Illustrations and Colors are perfect, might be the best looking 2D game in a long time. If you find the combat or bosses in this game difficult, perhaps you need to train more at the 2D gym with the rooster.. which I did... then I dominated. Like SMB, there's going to be some Extra levels (outside of the game story) that will make you lose your mind. The only thing that sorta' pissed me off were the precise timing of moves (for extra levels) that don't necessarily work perfectly with an analog controller, but with repetition is doable.… Expand
Average User Score: 8.4Jun 21, 2013I felt like I was playing NeoGeo... controls were perfect... it just had this real arcade feel to it. I dig it. There are a lot of negative reviews that piss me off... learn how to play the game before you diss it. There's some serious strategy here and the fun factor and replay value is high. The colors, the music, the way it feels, can't be ufcked with.
Three top games in the last however many years: Shadow Complex, Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac, and Hotline Miami.

Average User Score: 4.5Jun 7, 2013This game should not be sold on Steam, it should be for free on Newgrounds. If it were for free, I'd give it a higher score. I say this because it lacks many things that make a it a full fledged game.
Long story short you have to send this little moon guy (who falls from the moon) back to the moon. There are many ways to get to the moon. One way to get to the moon per the game is immediately next to the place you land after falling from the moon. What I mean is you can beat the game (one of the ways) within seconds after you begin to play.
Also, the game is buggy. Mostly that it won't play on most computers. It plays very slow, even on really fast machines. Not sure why, considering it's a simple 2D game, although with much post effects. No way to turn off these effects without editing the .ini in the game. I had to turn off post effects and was unable to play full screen without getting lag. The lag is so bad, and at first you'll think that's how slow the game is because you'll wonder why it'd lag on such a simple short game.
Things that cheapen the game are seemingly unfinished portions of the game. For instance there's a rocket ship connected to the flying island you land on. You jump at it, and it has no landing area, it's simply a flat 2D no design piece of real estate... you fall through it all the way past the map, and then you fly upwards. Why? This makes no sense... maybe if you landed in the spacecraft and it took off... not sure. Incredibly odd and not in an artistic way.
Also, there are puzzles to solve to take you back to the moon, and the presentation of these puzzles aren't the most appealing, the eye is drawn to the puzzles. The puzzle pieces in the game lack a "Hey Look At Me" aspect. There are also things to collect that make absolutely no sense, the presentation of things you collect need more work.
This game has a lot of potential. I like the concept, the atmosphere is catchy and mysterious. I hate how this is compared to Metroid... I find that sort of arrogant on behalf of the developers. This game isn't any where near a comparison to Metroid. The concept they were going for can be successfully found in a game (free) called "Soul Brother" and that had elements of Metroid.
There were many things that lacked a reasoning. Add to that, cheapening things such as the credits of the game written throughout the map took me out of the fantasy and imagination of the world.
The music was absolutely amazing. A+… Expand
Average User Score: 7.4Jun 7, 2013This game is solid. Speaking of just gameplay here... I'm a huge Shadow Complex fan, and simply wishing for it to come out on Steam wasn't working, so when I saw Deadlight I was hyped to have a similar experience.
The graphics, atmosphere, effects, control are pretty amazing. The level design and environment could rival any top-notch platformer. The haze and atmosphere gave it a fantastic ambience. Much of the art was certainly inspired by The Walking Dead.
Things that are incredibly horrible that made me think it may deserve an 8 are the following. The voice acting is absolutely garbage. The hick character pronunciated every word for instance. It was as if everyone was reading off a cue card. This is the worst voice acting I've ever heard, and whoever is responsible should be fired.
The cut scenes that weren't using the game engine were horrible as well. If the cut scenes were completely in-game engine, this game would receive a 10 (keep in mind my high score is due to the fact that I really enjoy platformers and 2D games, although this is 3D). Sometimes the game did use the game engine to tell the story, and when this happened it was awesome.
There's a leve called Rat Trap... and in my opinion it happens too early in the game... and it was a turn off. The level is cheap in parts and gives the impression that the remainder of the game will be a platformer miss-a-jump and you're dead. Also I found this one area that if you don't jump a spike correctly you die, after many attempts I found I had to actually walk touch the beginning of the spike then jump to avoid a trap after the jump (something that is NOT obvious, maybe I had a buggy version?).
A few oddities: You can't kill zombies with an axe that you get. In the cut scene he does kill the zombie with the axe. Falling in water that clearly has a bottom about the depth of your character causes death. You can call-out in front of non-zombie enemies and they don't see you.
The one part of the game that blew my mind was running from house-to-house dodging zombies and just barely making it. Game portions like this were so amazing. The levels and vastness seem endless, like when running from hordes of zombies through a town. Also you can call to zombies and have them fall off ledges. Just fun stuff. I wish I was able to get more weapons... or have the story show more characters to play... and more dealing with humans since they're more dangerous than zombies.… Expand
