The learning curve is steep, and a tutorial level would be nice, the manual is online and is enough to go on.
This is a hard game similar in difficulty to Sword of the Stars: The Pit.

I have spent much more on Legends of Pegasus and Endless Space and neither of those were are as fun as StarDrive in my opinion.
Here are my thoughts from playing 16 hours of the released version. Including a completed large game.
(+) Overall, this game does seem take MOO 2 as it's ancestry, and I like that. I don't thinks its a rip off as much as a homage to a great game that I love as one of my top games of all time.
(+) Race customization is like MOO 2.
(+++)The ship design is the best that I have ever seen in a 4X game, the larger ships will just blow you mind with the possibilities you get to manage everything right down to localized shields/armor to protect internal components.
(+) giving orders and layout of ground combat is possible.
(+) Tutorial was enough to get going.
(+) Real Management of colony, including building projects and defense.
(-) The tech trees are short but intact.
(--) No Campaign
