As a free game, the experience is enormously grindy, and as a paid game, the content is massively overpriced. MWO does deliver a unique experience, but ultimately the provided content is rather thin and still quite rough; as a competitive multiplayer game it lacks the depth and balance to sustain long-term interest despite how novel the mechanics are in the current shooter landscape.
MWO seems designed to deliver the minimum needed to extract as much as possible from fanboy "whales" starved for a Mechwarrior experience. If that description does not apply to you, then MWO probably isn't the game for you either as there are far better values out there in the multiplayer shooter genre.… Expand

BioShock is now a modern classic. Its successor, BioShock Infinite, takes us to a new world that is superficially just as captivating as Rapture, but the similarities are purely superficial. Where BioShock had ideas, Infinite simply has plot devices. Where BioShock asked us to choose, Infinite just asks us to run and shoot.
Part of what made BioShock special was that its ideas, emotions, story content, and gameplay were all coherent in a thematically consistent way. Ultimately BioShock told a story that was thematically compatible, and even thematically harmonious, with the conceits and conventions of FPS games. BioShock Infinite tries to tell a story, but the dissonance between the narrative/emotional content and the gameplay content is jarring in the new installment.
With a story that is so thoroughly undermined by the gameplay mechanics, Infinite needs to lean heavily on gameplay to be entertainment. Unfortunately, like BioShock, Infinite is merely a competent shooter from a gameplay perspective. Worse, the level designs are now more linear.
In sum, it's a a perfectly competent game, and disappointing when set against its predecessor.… Expand
Average User Score: 7.4Sep 22, 2013SR is probably slightly overrated at the moment as we are still coming out of a drought in the oldschool tactical RPG subgenre, leadingSR is probably slightly overrated at the moment as we are still coming out of a drought in the oldschool tactical RPG subgenre, leading reviewers to grade it on a bit of a curve simply because there are very few games like it at the moment. Ultimately, SR is a competent, but as yet unremarkable old-school RPG. Future patches and player content may bring more to the table.
Hopefully SR's first effort will prove to be just the leading crest of a small wave in isometric oldschool RPGs, because by itself it is somewhat overwhelming.
-Great user mod tools.
-Solid combat system, though you probably need to crank up the difficult to experience any challenge.
-Strong atmosphere, reinforced by the consistent tone of the (generally competent) writing.
-Far too linear to be a true successor to the isometric RPG classics.
-Save system can be inconvenient (though I personally was only trivially inconvenienced by it).
-Unclear if SR's community will be large and creative enough to supply interesting community content.
-Harebrained Schemes has heard the most common critiques of the game regarding linearity, save system, length, etc., and the next campaign ("Berlin") will attempt to address them.… Expand
