Th movie ambiance is closest I would say to The Fifth Element. The Fifth Element was a fun movie start to finish. This like Fifth Element has fantastic costumes that turn people into Jim Hensenesque muppets. The name of the movie itself makes one think of images of Power Rangers. The Power Rangers were pre-teen tween fantasy. Generally boring for a mature audience. This movie au contriare. This movie is for a very mature audience. The movie itself is a parody on how Asians view Western culture. Journey to the West where at one time two characters make up after a disagreement. The make up includes a high five and a manly hug. The fish speaks;
"See how they are not quite kissing. impressive, no?" The bromance of the the moment was undeniably funny when the giant fish adds his comment. That is like how a foreigner from someone as far away as China might think he is supposed to think when he sees an American TV show. The King is a loudmouth speaking unconventional and disturbing comments every time you see him. Both before and after his nature is revealed. At one point a character says "I like the way he talks". Reminiscent of a current political icon and the reminder that people do like the way he talks and that he has broad support even though the majority disapproves of his use of language. The problem I had was figuring out the references. It was a puzzle which I would say wasted immensely creative costumes and sets. I am sure is part of the parody Western culture. The Demons Strike back. The Minister (religious figure) is a woman. The Buddhist Monk is a phony with odd tendencies. It doesn't matter who has the last laugh. I'm laughing at their portrayal of Western Culture. If you are looking for a deep laugh fest this is your movie. If you are looking for Lord of The Rings you will not find it (however, some of the set parody may include imagery similar to Lord of The Rings). You will not even find the Power Rangers unless you try really really hard.… Expand

There are few flaws for a grungy futuristic cop thriller. The battle in the block is similar to other movies where the heroes are trapped in a confined place and having to fight their way out. It would be nice to see a Cable series of Dredd that portrays the character and comics in the same way as this movie.… Expand

Some backstory on the dwarves would have been interesting. Hi Ho Hi Ho along with a battle song of them forging weapons. Anything but two random dwarves joining for comic relief. Too many cliches in fantasy cinema. The ban love cliche followed in the end by the ice queen turning over a new leaf to help destroy her more evil sister was painful although fitting for the Ice Queen and the Evil Queen
that hated Snow White Queen in the faerie tale.
A quest by the party some good stunts good outfits and good cast does not a great movie make. It made me wish in the end the Abominable Snowman from Rudolph had helped destroy the Ice Queens palace. Instead of Smaug at the beginning the Abominable Snowman helping the Hero and Heroine break up the set at the end.… Expand

The Arthurian legend isGood movie. Great cast. It feels more like an experiment in High fantasy than a retelling of the Arthurian Legend.
The Arthurian legend is based on a leader in Britain that forged peace between the Romans, Celts (Britons), Anglo-Saxon-Jutes and the Vikings. He was a Romano-Celt. He turned the conflicts of the different peoples into a peaceful nation. A nation that rose and disappeared so fast leaving a memory that has lasted almost two thousand years.
The different King Arthur renditions that I will compare this to are;
1) Excalibur. The movie that is by far the best King Arthur retelling of them all. Every scene has your blood pumping your skin crawling your anger inflamed or a shock to your remaining senses.
2) The Sean Connery retelling. Camelot. Not bad. It is too watered down made for an audience that includes date-night crowds. 3) Clive Owen. Arthur. Good conceptualization with Merlin as a Celt. Accurate armor and dress. Fighting the Saxons who are mercilessly attempting a forceful conquest of the Isle of Britain.
4) Starz Camelot. Great moments good reimagining. We likely will never see the smiths daughter rise as the Lady of the Lake. Merlin was a fantastic reimagining of a young wizard without discipline. They blended the legend with sitcom episodic interactions. Turned down the intensity of the story. Morganna was fantastic too. The actress from Kingdom of Heaven. 5) Merlin the made for TV series. I saw this I can't remember much of it. Not memorable but well reviewed.
The effects were called generic by one critic. The videogame sequences were one of the better parts of the movie. The weakness in it is it didn't make your blood pump (move you emotionally) until the Celtic Hymns kicked in at the end. The sequences of the partisan war were too brief. There was not enough character intensity showing Arthur forging his band of post story Round Table Knights. The Guy Ritchie modern underworld takes were good. Arthur being a rogue in his youth is a good concept (rather than being raised by merlin and his adopted Father from the legend).
I enjoyed the effects loved the cast. The story was flatlined. Jude Law's character was portrayed as disinterested. A little bit of Hollywood portrayal of Royalty. They had to mesh the most important moments better. Those are his upbringing. The revealing of his lineage and the sword in the stone. His rise as a leader. His victory over the bad guys.
Guy Ritchie needed to make it more like Batman Dark Knight and the original Excalibur. He didn't concentrate on the main characters. There were a lot of characters. I never had any feel of bonding between the group. It could be a product of the times that when reviewed with terms like generic you tend to receive a review from me with generic imagery.
Excalibur my favorite has the heavy armor of the High Middle Ages way past Arthur's time. Perhaps it works because the memory of his Kingdom and the Chivalry of his Knights was remembered at its peak in the high Middle Ages. The heart of the story is that England (Great Britain) love the character for defeating so many enemies and bringing peace. Only to see it disappear within a blink of the eye. Leaving only memory and song (poetry) that is cherished and loved by many today.… Expand

Good movie good script. Deserves an 8. It's brilliant in what it isn't. It isn't the first 3 movies. The Fellowship etc. is a masterpiece of drama and action. The Hobbit series is not.
What the Hobbit series is solid storytelling. From an unexpected party to Riddles in the dark. To Beorn's house to Bilbo's waking of smaug. The Battle of The Fiv Armies could have had more drama. It could have had more sorrow. More epic combat. It didn't. Waiting for Dwalin to swing a maul in epic fashion turned into Dwalin as an emotional wreck at the change in Thorin. Thorin could have led his Company in epic combat and fallen in battle slicing down Bolg's bodyguard. He didn't. He died in single combat. Not dramatic not epic. But brilliant.
The love story added is,well, Hollywood. It leaves the story intact, but it's bringing in an element of what might have been (and some women) to the movie. It also brings the elf army and dwarf army to light in solid fashion. The men are a little weak. Original and on the surface dull. All told Peter jackson and crew have lost nothing. Peter Jackson's directing neither takes from other movies nor outdoes them. Solid storytelling. Reminding us that the actors and audience as well as the genre lose nothing from these movies. They only gain.
I would have like to give it a 9 or 10. It doesn't deserve it. It deserves what is offered to us from the actors and crew. Something we can enjoy. Something they can be proud of achieving… Expand
