Average User Score: 6.4Dec 27, 2013I'm going to bash the negative critiques by by saying they apparently don't have the brains to communicate clearly why this game fails. I'm going to give you a very direct statement regarding this game's failures, and this game's rather shocking successes.
If we look at the camera control for the character, when using keyboard, we might feel the control operates imprecisely. However, if we compare how this game's camera works, it works at least as well as Mass Effect camera. The camera was created with the controller in mind, which makes it very smooth when playing with a controller. I've experienced this issue with other games similarly designed.
While animations don't always match up with the combat, I can think of other games that have, again, a similar issue, yet received a higher rating. Sure, you can tell they didn't have a mo cap suit for the actors. I get a sense that these were all hand animated, which are quite good for that.
The voice overs aren't the best, but they work. Some of it is cheesy, some of it doesn't capture the right vibe in expression for what's going on. But, overall it works, and I got into the game without feeling interrupted from the environment by the voice acting. The only distracting aspect of the voice acting lies with the running voice over for breathing. It starts too soon, and doesn't sound like a winded runner.
I have a blast with the puzzles in game, as small as they are. They remind me of some of the good ones from Resident Evil 4. I enjoy the combat, chopping heads off with my preferred weapon, an axe. I enjoy listening to the recordings the doctor makes to himself, and reading the notes he finds related to the story. I enjoy using the PDA, which is their user interface.
If I could compare this game to another, I'd say it's like Resident Evil 4 & 5, and it's like Mass Effect series, and it's like Dead Space.
If they spent a little more time looking for voice actors out there to help them, they could have an expressive voice over casting. I can tell they put time into the assets, and coding. I think they could have used the same effort with the voice acting and animation.
Sure, there are things in this game that tell game developers what to avoid, but the developers did many things right. If you like games like dead space, or resident evil 4 and 5, or the first mass effect, check this game out. If this game came out around the same time of the original mass effect, or before it, they'd have gotten a score in the 80s here on metacritique.
There's three reasons they didn't get a higher score. There's only one "official" critique. The timing for release, and no one paid a critic for a good critique.
Play the game without comparing it to other games, but as it's own entity. I enjoy it, you might too. Destructoid go to hell with your overly subjective critique with no examples.… Expand
Average User Score: 7.5Dec 17, 2013This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoy playing as batman, and I like the ability to use the batwing to get from one end to the other quickly. However, this batman seems to lack something. It's noticible that splash damage made this game, the makers of Brink, and not rocksteady. It's just not as fun when thinking of the other two previous games.
I'm also not keen on the forced online mode. It doesn't seem fun at all trying to play FPS in batman game. Sure wish this was batman and robin playing together through the city in co-op mode, with more story. That would have been fun.
WARNING: THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS BELOW THIS POINT
mARK HAMill is the only joker outside of Heath Ledger, or Jack Nicolson. The Joker in this seems forced, too different in character from the other games. The change of both batman and Joker's voice in this game broke the asthetic for me, and the connection the other two games built.… Expand
Average User Score: 8.5Jul 28, 2013I've played many tomb raider games over the years. I've enjoyed the puzzles, and play. I didn't know what to really expect for play other than what I saw from the videos of this Tomb Raider. As I got into playing it, it's THE best tomb raider game to date. Great animations, great camera, music, voice acting and story. They kept in the puzzle solving, moving it nicely into today's environments and play. I STRONGLY suggest if you haven't played this game, do. You won't be disappointed.… Expand
Average User Score: 8.6Jul 28, 2013This walks the thin line between being a game and being interactive entertainment. The play reminds me of a "choose your own adventure" book from back inthe 1980s. The music and sound effects are good, the art is a nice comic book style, the controls are smooth, as is the camera. I enjoyed playing the first season. After the complete second season comes out, I'll probably get it when it goes on sale. Not a game I'd pay full price for, but worth 50% off.… Expand
Average User Score: 8.5Jul 28, 2013The movement in this game is awkward. By that I mean the movement of the camera doesn't match to the movement of the character. The controls aren't something you can just jump back into, although most keys are standard i for inventory, J for journal, etc. C is not character, it's a fighting style. The combat in this game is somewhat hard to control. The camera isnt 'particularly jerky, but it move fast. Targetting your weapons can be hard because you only have a small almost pinpoint cursor to use, which can easily get lost in battle. Witcher 2 improves this franchise quite a bit. I can play this, but witcher 2 I enjoy more.… Expand
Average User Score: 7.8Jul 28, 2013This is a very fun, action oriented game, with some similar elements to the recent Tomb Raider. If you like that game, you'll like this game. This is a lot of fun. Death feels powerful, even at level 1, as he should. He's death, after all. Only issue I have is slight issue with the camera jerkyness, and some hotkeys use odd keys, like [O] for the inventory instead of [I] and when you go into the inventory, the same key pressed on that menu should leave it, but only [ESC] leaves menus. So, they could have brushed that up a bit. Overall, fun slash fest, with a decent story.… Expand
Average User Score: 7.2Jul 24, 2013I've watched game play videos of this, I watched the developer videos. I decided, despite the negative comments about this game, I'd give it a shot. I'm glad I did. This game, while the controls aren't perfect, has a nice atmosphere. I loev the art, the music, and the voice overs have their own style. The voice acting is humorous, and enjoyable. The combat, skill, and crafting systems are nicely made.

Average User Score: 7.3Jul 24, 2013This game deserves a MUCH higher rating than it has. It's not a 66. I'm thoroughly enjoying this game. The combat system fights like batman, but you also get to select how each strike in a combo effects your situation. Some strikes can heal you, some can reduce cooldown timers, some add more damage. Ignore the metacritic rating. Watch the gameplay videos. If you think you might like it from that, then play.… Expand
Average User Score: 5.9Feb 7, 2013I noticed a short time before writing my review that the achievements in game aren't unlocking, or they are over counting the necessary amounts to complete the achievements. Not sure why entirely, but I think it would be good for them to fix that. Also, there's no way I know of if you buy the bot voice pack to turn it off. They should add that in so you can disable sound packs. Those are my only pieces of constructive criticism, other than make an open world dead space game The movement controls are slightly refined from dead space 2, the new weapon crafting system makes Isaac seem more like an engineer, crafting also ads the possibility for a huge amount of different weapons, being able to roam around the complex down on the planet and go between ships in space makes a nice addition to the dead space world. You can have a weapon add on that automatically picks up ammo. Would be nice to have that for the other items also. I love the story. It does go with the dead space world, so at times it's a bit predictable, but it kept me interested enough that the first day I got it I played 15 hours straight. Over all, they continued to achieve what makes dead space great as a solo horror game, and they co-op is outstanding! Resident evil takes the credit for starting the co-op in horror games, but how Visceral uses it, and doesn't makes the co-op like playing a different dead space game. Thanks for the hard work Visceral.… Expand
Average User Score: 8.3Jul 26, 2012Thank God New Vegas didn't crash when I tried to load it. As it stands with Fallout 3 game of the year edition through steam, I cannot run the game unless I'm not connected to the internet. Sad. Fallout 3 New Vegas runs smoothly through steam, in ultra mode for me without any issues. I can enjoy this. Thank God. Fallout 3 New Vegas I can play without interruptions, fully immersed.… Expand
