Average User Score: 6.6Oct 19, 2015This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good to see arnie back but action with him is very brief, the film is more about car chases, there's only really a 5 minute action scene with guns and a 3 minute fight scene. Plus the film is terribly written, both plot-wise and dialog-wise. Tries to be funny in the most awkward ways, major plot points make little sense. (Metal handcuffs not affected by magnet? Police helicopter doesn't have infra red? Why build a bridge, why not arrange a helicopter to transport them over the canyon, then to another car. why did the swat team not attack the corvette instead of trying to drive into it, presumably they have weaponry?)… Expand

Terrible setup, character introductions were handled very poorly. stoner element severely downplayed, and scenario established very messily. Pretty much the whole first half hour is a waste of time. Dialog is pretty bad, and the characters are paper thin. For the rest of the film: Unpolished action and choreography. The final action set piece was decent but not quite Borne level. The villains are b-movie level cheesy.
The last hour was watchable, wouldn't recommend it though.… Expand

I feel the exo skeleton aspect wasn't written in well enough though. Seemed a little redundant and as it wasn't necessary to the memory transfer, seemed like something he wouldn't allow to be fitted to his body for nothing. Plus the exo vs exo fight was a little unexciting.
Not sure why this movie doesn't get much praise, as it was a solid film with a great plot and I'd definitely recommend and would rewatch myself.… Expand

I found the first half hour was a poor way to introduce characters, and frankly found I didn't connect with any of them. I found that the film poorly demonstrated why it is that people will do silly things to summit and risk their lives. The characters barely had any backstory, and them trying to do such crazy things in the face of immediate danger wasn't expressed in a empathetic way. I felt as connected to the characters as I would to a character from a late 80s/early 90s slasher sequel. I couldn't empathise or understand why these people would do such stupidly obvious things. The loss of sanity caused by lack of oxygen, the hunger to summit against better judgement, none of this was portrayed well by the film for me.
I also found the film jumped around time frames poorly, and failed to show the actual struggle of the climb itself, skipping months of going between base camps and painstaking climbing, instead just showing you a few dangerous high-octane moments. It felt like the movie Jaws, if the ocean was the size of an Olympic Swimming pool, suspense was edited out of the film, and people were still trying to swim laps despite everyone telling them there's a shark coming towards them.
But, to each their own.… Expand

Despite re-covering stuff that was already handled well in Rami's Spiderman, this has good actors, decent action, especially for the heavily cgi stuff, and an interesting plot. I'm glad it had a different villain to the previous trilogy, and that it was handled well.
The most notable difference from this film and the Rami films, is that there is a strong emphasis on Peter Parker as a brilliant scientist, and also his web shooter devices. While it's strange that we must accept he can walk on walls and stick to anything, but has to bio-engineer an impossibly fantastic weapon that does the web shooting for him, I understand this is more in line with the comics, and so thus needs to be appreciated, even if suspension of disbelief takes one too many hits.
I think the biggest flaw of this film is it's release so close the the Rami films, which really made superhero films what they are today. As everyone knows this was mostly a film to retain the Spidermany Rights, and thus had to be made when it was, but in an ideal world this would've been made at a much later date, to better distance itself from Rami's trilogy.… Expand

Awful writing, awful comediennes, none of the humour works on any level, penis photos, throwing up on dead bodies, and as many vile and grotesque insults as possible. Just being vile doesn't make something funny, you sort of have to combine it with something that's funny. Only redeeming part of the film is Jason Stratham, who unfortunately isn't in the film enough. A perfect demonstration of why America isn't known for satire, for a brilliant satirical spy film look for OSS 117. This is more like Paul Blart In The CIA.… Expand

The characters areFilm script tries too hard. It's not a bad film, but the first 35-40 minutes is a bit weak, and generally it falls flat. The characters are cardboard cut-out, and they're written to be more interesting than they are, for instance it's unbelievable that lead had a perfect intricate social system in school as it pretty much falls apart the moment you try to depict it on screen. Earl is written as a stereotypical 'black guy' with no depth. Lots of inconsistencies in the film, such as being raised on foreign speciality foods, but insulting people eating foreign speciality foods, and Greg's personality in general. In fact pretty much all the characters are unlikeable. Rachel's the most likeable character, but of course she would be as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.
Anything that pays homage to classic films seems to be massively overhyped by critics, and any drama about cancer seems to get massively overhyped too in the same way Be Kind Rewind (2008) was overhyped 7 years ago and 50/50 was overhyped 4 years ago. So this film, focusing on both, seems to be getting far more attention than I believe it deserves. Honestly I don't see this being any better than 2002's A Night To Remember.
That being said the short films (or at least what we as an audience get to see of them) are pretty cool, and honestly I'd have preferred if that took more of a centrepiece of the movie for the first half, and the characters developed more fluidly, as the actual script and characters is bland.… Expand
