It's a story about a young woman with a dark past and a troubled personality who tries to free herself from a possessive and controlling family.
She meets a guy who might be as dark inside and she falls for him.
What attracts her to him? That his demons could be similar to hers? Lack of love during childhood? Who of the two is the beast?
Cinematographic-ally the movie is done very well. There is a lot of suspense. Excellent performances.
In my opinion though, the movie would be much better if it's ending was cut off completely.
It spoiled the whole impression. Trying to make it unpredictable they made it unbelievable.
But still a good watch.… Expand

where she shows life of an Indian Lakota tribe in South Dakota.
The protagonist Brady is a young but already famous bronco rodeo rider.
He lives to ride and train horses. This is something he could not live without. And then life gives him a terrible blow: he gets injured and may no longer ride horses.
The movie is slow but emotionally charged. Life is hard, and choices are even harder. Watching the movie you feel a lot of empathy towards those people.
In the end when titles start rolling we realize that there are no professional actors in the movie, all people play themselves. And there is not a single moment when the movie felt false.
I will not be surprised to see the film in the Oscar's list.… Expand

Sometimes you come out of a theater and think to yourself "what have I just seen?"
Usually an experience like that leaves me irritated or even frustrated about time wasted. Not this movie.
It is full of memory flashes some of which might be dreams that never occurred.
Reality mixed with a sick mind's hallucinations of a war veteran with PTSD who was abused as a boy.
You never have a full picture, only small fragments, and you have to think to make it whole. That is intriguing in itself since you cannot be sure you got it right.
Great performance by Joaquin Phoenix, intense albeit somewhat intrusive sound track, fantastic cinematography.
Overall, a piece of art made by talented people.… Expand

It is about people on the autism spectrum and other forms of personality disorders.
David who loves making inappropriate jokes meets Sara at a support group meeting. Sara is a very outgoing person who communicates mostly with a set of cliches, and that ticks David off. Initially.
The movie looks and feels authentic and honest, sometimes even brutal.
All people who play autistic folks do in fact have autism. That allows us to look inside their lives and understand it better what it takes to live with a personality disorder. They learn to endure shame and disappointment to live through.
This movie is definitely not for every audience but I enjoyed watching it with a mixture of warmth and sadness.… Expand

This is a story about an infamous scandal and cover-up in 1969 when a young and hopeful presidential candidate Ted Kennedy was responsible for a fatal car accident that caused death of his female campaign staffer.
Or, maybe it was not an accident?
There are still many unanswered questions about it. We will probably never know the truth.
In this movie Ted Kennedy and his father Joseph Kennedy Senior are shown as immoral mafia-type clan members ("family", as they call it) who consider themselves above the law and would stop at nothing to keep the power. There is always plenty of powerful people who would willingly help them do it.
And even more people who would be willing to forgive and forget, especially if they push forward the same political views. Isn't it the same nowadays?
I do not consider the movie a masterpiece but I would still recommend to see it especially for younger generation who know little about the scandal but might remember "the Lion of the Senate".
In the end of the movie there are chronicles circa 1969 of real people in Massachusetts reacting to Ted Kennedy's plea on TV to forgive him. Those reels are impressive.… Expand

The story focuses on two families, one white, the other black.
They work and live off the same land. The film is about hatred, racism, friendship, and also about how the war changed the world and this country.
As its name suggests, the movie is grim, the life is hard and unfair.
You can think of mud as a dark side of a human nature.
The film was a bit slow in the beginning and uneven at times but overall came out quite powerful and even somewhat hopeful at the end.
I wish there was less narration behind the scene. Acting was very good across the board.
The movie was nominated for several Oscars.

The plot is relatively simple: a divorcing couple decides to start their own lives anew.
Neither the father nor the mother plan to include their only 12-year old son onto their future lives. He finds our that his destiny is a boarding school and decides to disappear.
Through this personal story Zvyagintsev managed to show that the the whole governing structure of society is deeply sick. It produces parents who lack inner kindness, and it becomes hereditary. They do not have feelings toward each other and toward their children, and their children fall into the same trap.
A group of volunteers who keep looking for the boy after police refused to do it, is shown as competent, compassionate people, so drastically different from police.
Last scene where the mother trains in Russian Olympian uniform is symbolic of modern Russia that is cold, harsh, devastating, loveless.
It starts at the top with Russia's foreign policy and descends all the way through to citizens' lives.
Similar to his previous film "Leviathan", this film is a verdict to the regime but on a very different level yet done as masterfully.
With this film Andrey Zvyagintsev once again proved that he is the best contemporary Russian film director.

It is a docu-drama describing an event that happened in August 2015 on-board of a train to Paris when a few brave people stopped a terrorist from committing a massacre.
I salute the bravery of the those few who risked their lives to stop the terrorist but the movie is definitely not Clint's best.
I can understand why Eastwood picked that incredible story. It is quite inspiring that a regular person can become a real hero. Three Americans, main characters, play themselves in that movie. To my knowledge no director did it in a feature movie before Eastwood. But I could see why no one did it. You could tell these guys are not actors and that they were "acting" in the movie.
Additionally, there was too much of nothing in the film, especially during the trio's vacation in Europe. Much attention was devoted to development of the main hero, which is fine. But it would be much better to make it a short film, not full feature.… Expand

The latest film by Paul Thomas Anderson (aka PTA), film director famous for "Magnolia", "There Will Be Blood", and many others.
There is beautiful scenery here (not much of it though), gorgeous dresses, outstanding performance from leads, great casting, meticulous details.
On the other hand, dragging, slow, boring plot. It is not unusual for Anderson to dive into psychics of obsessive, troubled psychopaths but this movie left me cold as stone. Too many threads are left untied.
The film pretends to be artsy but rather weird. A weird film about weird people. If it is a love story, that love has to be taken into quotes.
I would give this film many technical Oscar nominations but definitely not the best feature.… Expand

Impressive! She made this film warm and funny.
Nominated for several Oscar awards including best picture, best director, best actress and best supporting actress.
