Fans of the original will find game play to be largely unchanged (though this is by no means a bad thing). The handful of new traps provides additional entertainment and the new maps are very welcome. Difficulty on the whole has been tweaked to provide a slightly more challenging experience and the addition of a new sorceress character (previously the unseen villain of the piece) provides options for a slightly different play style.
The true value however lies in the excellent cooperative multiplayer mode which allows 2 players to tackle the entirety of the campaign (and standalone play levels) side by side.
The game provides ample fun at a very reasonable price regardless but to truly experience this gem, a partner is a must.… Expand

The game represents a smooth, polished example of the genre. First impressions reveal a well built game with ample humor and character in the tool tips and design choices. Sadly, this experience does not continue throughout the game. Ship design is limited, with little real freedom other than equipping lots of the most recent module. The combat likewise is limited. Although employing an innovative 'cards' system which allows bonuses and counter reactions, combat is automated and largely a case of the biggest, best armed ships winning regardless of strategy. Repeated playthroughs will find little real character or differentiation in this game. Overall an enjoyable but bland game which bears future potential dependent on post launch added features.… Expand

Sword of the stars 2 is perhaps the most expansive and full featured 4x strategy game available today. Ship design excels with an expansive research tree and excellent macro management design for your empire. Whilst the occasional crash is still an issue, the autosave more than compensates for this. The time has come that the negative reviews can now be largely ignored and the game easily picked up at a bargain price. Give it a try, if you enjoyed the original, or any 4x strategy game you'll find something to love here.… Expand
