If you watched this and have never heard their music before then it will come across as two wannabe rock gods in a film that makes little sense. A fan of the band or just Jack Black and it's definitely for you; the typically silly Tenacious D humour, the general relationship between JB and Kyle Gass works very well and of course a brilliant soundtrack.
The script isn't brilliant, and as others have said it starts phenomenally well but goes off track and becomes ridiculous as the film progresses only to be saved from mediocrity by a brilliant ending. Though that's not to say there aren't some very good parts in the middle, it's just a bit of a mess. Those who criticize their "ego" by calling themselves the best band in the world obviously are blind to the fact that it's the joke. You don't have to be stoned to enjoy it, maybe it helps, but there are enough laughs and outright brilliant musical entertainment to keep a fan happy, and Tenacious D are possibly the only people capable of making such low-brow humour acceptable. To someone who isn't a fan, keep an open mind and remember when it comes to this duo nothing has to make complete logical sense. It's not a good idea to over analyze this film, just enjoy it for what it is. Ridiculous, rocking and hilarious.… Expand

I found the dwarf banter light-hearted and entertaining, the Middle Earth feeling natural and the scenes well structured. The last scene in the mountain was brilliant and capped if off very well! My criticisms come from the fact Bilbo doesn't get too involved in the story for large parts in the middle but from the scene with Gollum, the CGI is definitely overdone in parts and it's probably too long (though this can be forgiven, the time does fly by and the additional elements that have been added do work very well)
So while it's a tiny bit long for what it's supposed to be covering in the book, it makes up for it with an entertaining film. A good watch, not exceptional but I have few complaints!… Expand

I started off OK and until half way through it was a decent watch, but the filmThe special effects were terrible, well for 90% of the film. I started off OK and until half way through it was a decent watch, but the film caved in on its own complications. They went too far and over the top towards the end to the point where you were almost certain the snake/jon voight was going to somehow survive the attacks that would certainly have killed them had the film been sem-realistic. Jon Voight was regurgitated and a snake survived being blown up. I'll give this a 4 down to some good performances from Lopez and Voight and a good start.

The whole cast were brilliant, the directing ; well forget about Titanic and Avatar and James Cameron is one hell of a director/writer. He wrote the initial script and brought this whole thing to life in fantastic shape, his best film by a mile. Taking the idea of one Alien and having a whole army of them is one thing, but making it as horrifying and more action packed is a truly magnificent achievement. The Aliens themselves look absolutely terrifying and the way some of the shots were filmed were absolute genius. Alien was 10 and so is this. I don't think this is better than Alien, but this, Alien and 2001 are equally the best sci-fi films ever made. Watch this film.… Expand
Average User Score: 5.7Nov 9, 2010This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be fair, Alien 3 was too bad to end the franchise on, and out of what looks like an improvised storyline as a way to make up for Fincher's calamity, this is not bad at all, a LOT better than Alien 3. The story was here and there, not the best but not the worst and it was certainly believable. The characters weren't brilliant I was disappointed with Ryders' character and Ripley was somewhat interesting apart from that OK. The directing was a hell of a lot better than Fincher's, although that's not a difficulty. Special effects were brilliant compared to Alien 3, somehow not as good as the first two a saw a few iffy shots and aliens from a distance looked like tigers with paint on them but up-close: intimidating. Overall, compared to Alien 3 this was a good way to finish the story (unless another film is made after the prequels) and the only thing stopping me from scoring 7 was the human/alien's death and Ripley's pure weirdness. -----By no means overly gross and not AMAZING but better than a lot of films I can think of.… Expand

The whole story was pretty far-fetched and it was just too depressing. Although it is a dark film I think that making every scene as depressing as the last was just too much for any normal person to bear. Ben Thomas is a **** protagonist as he is basically a douche. The writers could have made him a really good character but in the end they just made him hateful and bitter, meaning that we don't care about his problems. I understand that he has to be depressing to a certain level but this was unbearable. The 4 that I gave was for Will Smith's acting and an almost convincing death scene. ----By the way, the whole box jellyfish thing was stupid. It was put in the film because he thought they were beautiful as a child. Not the best of references. Why not use a shotgun or jump of a cliff? His house was near the sea! Why not take a plunge instead of using the most ridiculous means of suicide in movie history?… Expand

It seemed to be off the pace that itI am a big fan of film noir and I am open to the concept of neo-noir but this didn't do anything for me. It seemed to be off the pace that it should be keeping up with and although it has some good noir elements to it it didn't provide much entertainment value.----
ACTING was all round quite odd. The characters seemed pretty unrealistic and dull to me, although there was some good acting. I have to be honest, Gordon Levitt was more or less abysmal. ----PLOT. All the characters seemed dark and there was constant themes of mistrust, which is obviously in keeping with the noir side. Except, film noir was made at a dark time (40s-50s) and I think that now, it is irrelevant to use the same plot devices and themes. It just doesn't work, especially with a colour picture. ----DIRECTING. It was OK, but it didn't save this film from being a drag. ----CINEMATOGRAPHY: Well, a dark theme film and there is a dark tone to it, but I think the film was too active and full on as oppose to being kept subtle with clever fighting scenes blended in, like a noir film should be. ----Overall, I thought the idea of basing a noir in a high school COULD have been good, but was ultimately risky and in the end I think it just didn't work. A modern day Noir (neo noir) shouldn't stray too far away from the old 40s/50s films, after all, it is based on them. Too many elements were changed in Brick and the elements that remained didn't fit it as a result of the off-pace story and the unnecessarily unspecific character depth. Remember, characters like Sam Spade were dark, suspicious and cynical, but not completely distant to the point where we can't relate to them. ----Final thought: Brick tries to borrow from the classic noir but by trying to make it too modern it's changed the dynamic and become a failure.… Expand
