TNT RoughCut Andy Klein

Kay doesn't seem to know the meaning of moderation.

50

Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman

The only fun is in watching Stallone square off against Alan Cumming and Mickey Rourke.

50

Portland Oregonian Shawn Levy

If the film doesn't touch the original, it doesn't hit rock bottom, either.

50

Philadelphia Inquirer Steven Rea

A thuddingly dull remake of the 1971 crime drama starring Michael Caine.

50

Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

It is not a terrible movie, and Stallone has appeared in far worse. It's just that, although diverting, it's too routine for its own good.

42

Seattle Post-Intelligencer William Arnold

The movie around Stallone is fairly dreadful, so overly stylized and poorly written that it's always a struggle to stay oriented.

41

Mr. Showbiz Larry Terenzi

McKenna's script is a frayed string and a contextual nightmare, peppered with puzzling references to the first film in a lame attempt at homage.

40

TV Guide Maitland McDonagh

Shot in shades of steely gray and streaked with near-constant rain, this gloomy revenge thriller is a sadistic cartoon.

Austin Chronicle Marc Savlov

The film itself is a muddle, all rapid-fire step-edits and grainy, blue-filtered hokum. What is good is Stallone.

Boston Globe Jay Carr

A sodden-looking film.

30

Salon.com Charles Taylor

Stallone returns in a gangster remake that wears itself (and the audience) out trying to be cutting-edge stylish.

It's almost always night and almost always raining.

San Francisco Chronicle Bob Graham

This noir mystery is murkier than it needs to be, through no fault of Stallone's.

Should you get Carter? Sure - but make it the Michael Caine classic Warner Bros. is releasing on video next week.

Sly, slick and slow.

Washington Post Desson Thomson

If there's one piece of wisdom to be culled from this botched project, it's this: No one gets Carter.

Variety Todd McCarthy

A useless remake of Mike Hodges' 1971 British gangland cult classic.

LA Weekly John Patterson

If you've never seen the original, you may have no idea what's going on.

New York Daily News Elizabeth Weitzman

The result is a throwaway story hidden beneath a messy jumble of weird camera angles, worthless editing tricks and an ill-placed, obnoxious score.

10

The New York Times A.O. Scott

So minimally plotted that not only does it lack subtext or context, but it also may be the world's first movie without even a text.

John C. gave it a 10:
Loved it these people are just plain idoits.

Yoon Min C. gave it a 3:
What invested the original so much with grim emotional power was the element of the stifling class divisions in British society. It was a great kitchen sink gangster movie. Caine was rebelling against the built-in priveleges in the hierarchical system that led to his brother dead and left him near powerless. To be sure, what with the dot.com millionaires of the 90s, this remake of Get Carter has some class elements too but it doesn't have the repressed anger of the original. And, it's also louder and more stupid because it's a Hollywood movie with Stallone mumbling most of his lines. If you thought some of the cockney accents were hard to catch in the original, forget about discerning Stallone's teutonic lunkhead babytalk.

Get Mulroneycakes gave it a 0:
Get Kay, more like. Surprisingly good cast, but this film is just intrinisically WRONG. IT'S WRONG.

Dingo R. gave it an 8:
Good chase scenes. Good one liners. If you don't like action don't bother. but when comparing apples to apples ... A good action flick.. Plot is straight forward action revenge.

Rich B. gave it a 10:
Either you get this kind of movie or you don't. If you do, this is a great film with an aspiring look and sound, with Stallone adding a perfect performance.

Elaine T. gave it a 0:
We walked out and got our money back about 10 minutes into the movie. It was shot too close, Stalone looked awful. His eyeliner was too obvious. The acting was embarrassing. Was there a plot? As I said, we couldn't stay to find out. Besides, I had to rearrange my sock drawer.

Ryan M. gave it a 2:
Please. If you're looking to make a film, make a film, don't make a ludicrous unwatchable media slammer.
