New Times (L.A.) David Ehrenstein

Where The Iron Ladies makes its mark, and holds our interest, is in the way it integrates old-fashioned "low" comedy with social observation.

75

Christian Science Monitor David Sterritt

The movie has enough color and spirit to make lively viewing.

The same underdog formulas and sunny disposition that turned it into an unexpected Thai box-office hit should win it friends here, too.

75

San Francisco Chronicle Carla Meyer

Queeny, corny and impossible to resist.

Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

It is high-energy entertainment that is also silly and sentimental and so over-the-top as to become wearying at times. But that it is also funny and good-natured ends up counting more.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer Sean Axmaker

It's still too shrill and silly to take seriously, but the high spirits and naïve message of tolerance and pride is oddly, innocently winning.

Austin Chronicle Steve Davis

A satisfying Cinderella story in which its outcast crew finally get their glass slippers, if not handsome princes. In the greatest of storytelling traditions, it is a true fairy tale with a happy ending.

New York Daily News Jami Bernard

High spirits and colorful hissy fits go a long way toward masking the inexperience of this cast of mostly nonprofessionals. It's a charmer.

Philadelphia Inquirer Carrie Rickey

A goofy sports inspirational.

TV Guide Maitland McDonagh

It's a frequently funny diversion that doesn't have a mean-spirited bone in its body.

Miami Herald Charles Savage

A formulaic and didactic but good-hearted and sometimes amusing underdog sports yarn and plea for social acceptance.

Chicago Reader Mark Peranson

Two interesting asides: the director and most of the cast aren't gay, and the film is based on a true story from 1996 -- the real Iron Ladies are shown, too briefly, during the closing credits.

Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

That the movie is fun is undeniable. That it is bad is inarguable.

Variety Dennis Harvey

Its screaming-queen stereotypes will look pretty retro in most Western markets, even if an earnest pro-tolerance message disarms potential offense.

Village Voice Jessica Winter

We get a bunch of straight actors focusing on the "gayness" of their characters, mincing and lisping and melodramatically breaking nails, all in the besmirched name of tolerance.

As flimsy and manipulative as the shallowest Hollywood fantasy.

An inspirational movie that bravely exploits sensitive issues that are rarely even talked about in this side of the world. A credible performance by most of the actors considering most them are not actual gays.

Fun, engaging, hilarious! Corny at times, but a welcome alternative to the starndard mold overtaking the american gay film genre.
