Film.com Henry Cabot Beck
A terrific piece of neo-realistic filmmaking.
Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas
Although there is real pain and suffering in It All Starts Today, it is too impassioned, too brisk and too embracing of life and human foibles to be depressing.

A warm, often invigorating and ultimately moving ode to community values.

An intensely involving, Ibsen-esque human drama populated by complex, sympathetic heroes.
New York Daily News Jami Bernard
It's an amazing slice-of-life story that will make you want to rush home and hug the kids.
The New York Times Dana Stevens
Strikes a difficult and necessary moral balance, refusing to succumb to hopelessness but also refusing to rule it out.

A tender and passionate protest, not without laughter, by Bertrand Tavernier -- a director who is not only gifted but honorable.

Tavernier's compassionate views and long filmmaking experience shine through this eloquently acted drama.

This is a film about small victories, huge defeats and finding the will to keep fighting.

Well worth seeing for the terrific performances.
Chicago Reader Patrick Z. McGavin
Tavernier gives the children vivid, sharply delineated voices; working with a largely nonprofessional cast, he strips bare the characters' frailty but grants them a decency and honesty that redeems them despite the mounting hardships and tragedies.

A superb performance from Torreton, easily one of the finest actors working in France today.

Yoon Min C. gave it a 9:
If there's one director in the world who can't make a bad or even ungreat movie it's Bertrand Tavernier. He doesn't go for intellectual conceits, stylistic excesses, egomaniacal posturing. Instead, he makes honest, highly intelligent, and multifaceted films about all manner of subjects. This film about a teacher trying to do his human best amidst social decay and bureaucratic redtape is a sobering glimpse into contemporary French society. And, if the film still feels somewhat hopeful it's an optimism hardearned thru integrity and courage.
