The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

The characters remain funny and likable, and they all live on Earth.

The quintessence of the buddy cop pic, "LW4" is big on action, playful banter and just enough plot to keep our attention from wandering.

I think the script by television writer Channing Gibson (no relation) is the funniest of them all.

One could argue about which "Lethal Weapon'' is the best, but No. 4 is certainly the funniest, warmest and most idiosyncratic.

It's a calculated formula for success, and makes for entertaining viewing, but those expecting something with the spark of the first two pictures may be disappointed.

This movie is exceptionally brutal, cruel, savage and without conscience -- and that's just the comic parts. In contrast, the violent action sequences are quite entertaining.

Danny Glover and Mel Gibson make a gently contrasted (and nicely self-reflexive) odd couple in this action-comedy sequel.

Richard Donner's sequel is more than eager to please -- it's desperate.

Part 4, to its credit, is the noisiest. Disappointingly, it's also the worst: not bad, just not as good.

Don't get your expectations up, but "LW4" is a decent enough date film.

At the Lethal Weapon plant, what you see, after 11 years, are the rusting remnants of a once innovative model.

The movie has homophobic touches, though, and with so many Asian characters, some viewers may wonder why every single one is portrayed as either a hapless victim or a wicked villain.

Lethal Weapon 4 has all the technical skill of the first three movies in the series, but lacks the secret weapon, which was conviction.

The New Yorker Bruce Diones

It's take-the-money-and-run filmmaking, with the actors practically winking their dialogue at each other, and it's all supposed to be tongue-in-cheek fun. It isn't.

The result is a calculated, cynical piece of business that epitomizes the creative bankruptcy and contempt for the audience that infects so much of the blockbuster side of Hollywood.

Not only is the franchise growing hoary, by now it's become downright laughable, leaving Lethal Weapon 4 feeling more like a bad Fox sitcom than anything else.

Tony B. gave it a1:
Please, Warner Brothers, let's not have any more of this claptrap, and if you must make #5, knock off the Joe Pesci character while the credits are rolling. He is absolutely horrible.

Jason J. gave it a 10:
First of all, this film wasnt made to please Hollywood, it was made to give closure to a great movie franchise. It is like a family reunion that takes us back to the old days when movies didnt have to have computer technlogy to generate fans an followers. The reason this film is different from the first 3, is because it depicts how Riggs and Murtaugh cope with their job and lives as older people. I believe this film was made for the fans of action movies from the 80's. They dont make movies like these anymore, and they deserve respect where respect is due.

Andrew M gave it a 5:
If you strolled into the cinema to watch this movie, having never seen nor even heard of the first three LW's, but just possessing a love of buddy-cop-action films, I would confidently predict that you would enjoy yourself, without exactly having the time of your life! In other words, as a stand alone film, LW4 is good. For the genre, it's solid, competent fare. It has a bright, witty script, colourful characters, contemporary (though uninspiring) plot, and the required number of action/shoot-'em-up scenes. All pretty much standard. Unfortunately though most of us can't escape the fact that it is the fourth installment in a series that should have stopped after two (preferably 1 and 3 should remain - and chuck out the tacky 2nd). As good as some of the elements in LW4 are, it's little more than a tired rerun, a one-for-the-road type film for the lead cast, and the performances feel as such. It's just too leaden for its own good. I pray they don't go for a 5th. How many '5' movies are better than average - and how many can you clearly remember seeing and liking? Enough already!

Pat C. gave it a 2:
Not even Pesci & Russo can save this rip-off of its own squalid but action-packed predecessors. Surely Gibson in his now stock avenging-angel role will not wring more than a couple more billion dollars out of playing such a character.

Noel T. gave it a 1:
One lethal weapon too many. I don't even want to talk about this movie. Just the thought of it gives me a headache.
