Mr. Showbiz Kevin Maynard
The film has an unabashed romantic tone that's matched by Wenders' usual flair for visual drama.

Conceived by U2's Bono, it's not quite as bad as it might have been. After all, its own star, Mel Gibson, has famously called this tale of destitute misfits "as boring as a dog's a——."

Pretentious and trite.
The New York Times A.O. Scott
A mellow dream of a movie that's an acquired taste. It's attractive because of the oblique way that Mr. Wenders ambles through a murder mystery that's stronger on characterization than on plot.

So silly it's best taken ironically. But the film, much of it shot digitally, is also astonishingly beautiful.

Wenders creates an imaginative, stylized cityscape, but what's missing is the compelling story that could bring the setting to life.

A fantasy, a fairy tale, but its characters and the emotions they elicit become painfully real.

The film isn't very good. The Million Dollar Hotel is an uneasy melding of Hollywood shtick and art-house sensibilities.

He (Gibson) ramrods his way through the bugged-out hysterics as if he were appearing in a movie that actually made sense. What a brave heart.

If any of these characters were half as resonant as Wenders appears to think they are, the film might have seemed charming instead of merely stranded.

How this hopelessly muddled and tedious dirge got released -- unless it was through the clout of Mel Gibson, who's grafted on as an FBI agent in a neck brace, with no discernible connection to the action -- is the real mystery.

There's a vacancy in The Million Dollar Hotel, and it's between Wim Wenders' ears.
Read Full Review >Village Voice Michael Atkinson
Wenders's The Million Dollar Hotel is something of a monstrosity -- liquored self-indulgence taken to its own astral plane.
Read Full Review >Rolling Stone Peter Travers
The script that Nicholas Klein has conjured from Bono's idea is a quicksand that sucks down a solid cast.

Maxim I. gave it a10:
I always took the phrase "Americans are stupid" as only a stereotype, but after reading the critics reviews, I see they are. Million Dollar Hotel is an amazing movie. It has soul, an amaizing story. After the movie you find yourself in heavy shock, you feel your eyes were opened, you feel that that different kind of people exists, you feel your soul opened up but only after an arrow hit it. It's amaizing. This movie is the only American movie, and I have seen alot, together with Man On the Moon, that i can call a real, good movie. But the American critics? They proved they are so stupid. They didn't like the movie, it's there right. But their arguments! My god, have you read their arguments? "This movie has no explotions". You want explotions? Join Al-Queida. "You understand the point only in the end". Thats the whole beauty!!! Thats what makes it so damn smart. For the whole movie you are glewed to the screen, as if you are in some magic world, a sick, magic world. You understand it only in the end, and the moment you understand it you feel like you are hit in the face by cold whater. Shure you are to smart for that! You need to know right at start who is the bad guy, who is the good guy, and let the bombing start. This movie is for people people with a soul, and with a mind. It's an LA movie so after I have seen it I thought: "How can Americans be stupid, when they make such Amazing movies? Now I know Bono wrote it, but it was shot as an American movie", and then I read the critics, and back to reality. After reading the critics reviews here, i finaly understood what empty people means.
Gino M. gave it a3:
Like watching two corporate executives talk jibberish to each other while switchin out their slacks for women's jeans and axe affect gel for flat iron hair with blonde highlights on the 71st floor of the US Bank Building for no apparent reason at all. It's so seedy.....I'm soooooo intrigued by these people that obvious embody Downtown Los Angeles. Obviously.
Ioannis P. gave it a9:
This may be a bit slow for some, but it has many qualities including great ating and direction.
Laura P. gave it a10:
This is an absolutely fabulous movie. Mel Gibson's character is a little weird, but overall this was a great movie!
brett gave it a10:
I thought it was original and bloody brilliant.
Ashley S. gave it a 10:
This movie is simply incredible. U2's music throughout the film really worked nicely and made the film all that much more lovable. This movie will nearly bring you to tears at the brilliance of it all....the characters are wonderful, each full of mystery...like most of the film. This movie is nothing short of AMAZING.. It will really leave you thinking..and wanting to watch it again..and again!
The Gilbert Mulroneycakes Night On Five gave it a 1:
Wim Wenders. Good director. Sometimes. When he's not, you know, drunk on his own talent. Like, say, here. It could have been a good film, but Wenders buggers it up completely with the floridity of his direction. It's almost impossible to watch without sighing or wincing every thirty seconds. One point for the Bono connection.
