The strength of Push is its relentlessness. The movie doesn't pause for anything and, when it provides exposition, it does so without bringing the action to a grinding halt.

Superhero fans will likely be into Push just for the cool-factor of watching embattled heroes and villains in tense war of wits, wills, and skills. That broader audience is less likely to come along for the ride.

As fantastical as all that sounds, the pleasure of Push comes from its glamorized grit, its no-nonsense pacing and the committed performances of the actors roughhousing in the gray area between heroism and villainy. It's pure popcorn, popped fresh, doused in butter and sprinkled with soy sauce.

Imaginatively filmed by Peter Sova, Push has a dizzying, chaotic energy that pulls you along. Paul McGuigan directs with maximum efficiency and minimum use of computers, creating effects that feel satisfyingly tangible.

Mostly it's a series of dream-image clues scribbled out by juvenile seer Fanning, followed by super-powered smackdowns between agents and mercenaries with slangy titles like watchers, stitchers and sniffers.

A weightless, style-driven thriller set in a photogenically chaotic Hong Kong.

A supernatural action thriller, is jangly, jarring and violent. But more disconcerting is watching the sweet-faced Dakota Fanning swear, get drunk and pack heat -- in both fists, no less.

Suggestive of "X-Men," "The Matrix" and the television show "Heroes," Push is one of those time-mangling thrillers that manages to seem both complicated and superficial.

Fanning's watcher is watchable, yet the kid-actress extraordinaire is so polished it kind of makes your head explode.

Director Paul McGuigan ("Lucky Number Slevin") has never been keen on plot logic, and that might be fine here if he offered anything other than Peter Sova's lush images of Hong Kong.

At the very least, a movie like this requires coherence to stay afloat. Barring that, it needs a star to distract us.

This completely rips off "Heroes," which itself ripped off a great deal from the "X-Men," so no real imagination here...except for the "Sniffs," who creepily track people by smell.

A ragbag of shopworn ideas nicked from Philip K. Dick, this sci-fi thriller never stops finding new ways to make no sense.

Despite its high-profile cast and a sizable marketing push from distributor Summit Entertainment, audiences won't require any paranormal powers of their own to realize they've seen this one before.

A curiously inert and talky action picture about good-looking mutants on the run from bad (but equally good-looking) ones, Push wastes a decent idea and stylish direction on a script that's much more Ingmar Bergman than Stan Lee.

If your tolerance for repetition in genre films is already low, this one will probably push you right over the edge.

Two awful things about Push are at least interesting: The first is the way in which the story is confused. The second is that the story makes no sense.

I saw the original version of this same story 28 years ago. It was called "Scanners" and it blew my mind for real. Push just blows.

Awesome movie. This movie had a great plot and kept me on the edge of my chair waiting to see what happened next. The idea of this movie was very well thought-out. I hope there will be a sequel.
Derek gave it a4:
The movie had great special effects and some cool -- if not a bit far-out -- powers (come on, blowing up fish by screaming?). That said, it has a plot that's kind of like 500 oz. of grey molasses in a 250 oz. tank: It's slow moving, boring, and they try to fit too much into one movie by leaving complete webs of questions unanswered. If you were like me, you spent the first half hour telling yourself that the plot would turn into something other than random scenes while wondering if that plot twist would ever be explained.
Roderic R gave it a9:
Pretty good. A lot better than the people who blatantly dismiss it. It had a chance to be a 10, but just couldn't do it. Still, worth watching. Dakota Fanning will be a superstar.
Ryan S gave it a4:
The characters had some cool abilities. It was fun to watch them use their super powers. Other than that the movie was slow-moving and mostly uninteresting.
Felicia gave it a9:
If ur lookin for a gr8 thinkin movie, than I recommand... okay I can't do that any more. Please notice how every bad review of this movie has bad spelling or "iz" saying it was too convoluted. Please notice how every good review of this movie is from a well-educated and good-looking person who can follow plot twists and nay, even CRAVES them. The previews make this movie out to be a retarded "Jumper" sequel. It's not. It's pretty smart- if you watch hard and pay attention you'll be rewarded handsomely, and this movie is one annoying 12-year-old away from being a perfect 10.
Jack F. gave it a4:
Push sounded like a cool movie when I heard about it. Not long into the movie I realized that I was wrong. It starts with the toolbag main character who is hopelessly dependant on a 13-year-old girl(never a good sign). His moronic friends didn't help much either. Even the fight scenes aren't any good. You can't review this movie without mentioning those two gay chinese guys that scream all the time. Did that seem rascist to anyone else? One of the most satisfying movie deaths in recent memory when one of them got stabbed thru the neck. That was really the only good part. The rest will put you to sleep.
Cliff M gave it a10:
The critics for this movie do it grave injustice only showing how shallow and formula Hollywood has become in order for an action movie to become successful. Something that has to be appreciated in this movie is that it blends not only classic action flick sequences and story lines, but it also adds a very in depth plot twist that comes together very well at the end. To simply it for some of you, it means this movie requires you to "think". This isn’t just a simple story line littered with ungodly expensive special effects with a story line that is full of holes and a weak plot (Transformers 2, I’m looking at you), it is a comic book movie based on a series that achieves a great story with a limited budget. It also has a very refreshing plot scene, soundtrack, and direction for Push. While Push has been described by some as a Heroes mixed with X-files knockoff, these critics are individuals that don’t truly appreciate comic book and super hero genres, whose only experience with this world is probably with TV shows such as Heroes, of which they probably only scan through an episode or two, but have zero experience and appreciation with actual comic book storylines and scifi in general. You wouldn’t get a country fiddle player to critique a concert pianist, or a trained opera singer to judge a folk singer, or a Pro golfer to score a NCAA wrestling match, so why would you get a hack no talent columnist/movie critic whose top three favorite movies probably include My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Mama Mia, and Scary Movie, to critique this movie? This movie begs to have a sequel, but unfortunately, thanks to Hollywood’s short attention span that caused the negative criticism that it did, this movie will probably not receive a second chance. That’s a shame, because with a bigger budget, this movie could honestly be a classic.
