In no way is this a serious movie. Still, it's hard to resist.

Had Williams chopped away more pointedly at the rambling script, he might've had something memorable.

Everything that cynical moviegoers despise and the tender-minded adore.

So heavy on incident, contrivance, coincidence, improbability, sudden reversals and dizzying flash-forwards (sometimes years at a time) that it seems a wonder the characters don't crash into each other in the confusion.

Ultimately, it's more an emotional hodgepodge than a compassionate look at real human problems.

Hard-core chick shlock, weakened by odd shifts in tone and a slack pace, but elevated by a luminous performance by Natalie Portman.

A top-notch cast compensates for dubious credibility.

Worthwhile performances (including cameos from Joan Cusack and Sally Field) and one-liners, but don't leave your home looking for Heart.
Film.com Robert Horton
Serves up the usual homilies, but it lacks the quirky density and cinematic snap.

Although its lushness and penchant for melodrama are the cinematic equivalent of Billy Sherrill's syrupy string arrangements for George Jones, Tammy Wynette and Charlie Rich circa 1973, the movie deftly manages to remain sweet without becoming saccharine.

Sloshes between comedy and drama, never quite hitting stride as either.

Home may be where the heart is, but I kept wishing this poor silly girl would up and move.

Simply put, it may be the lamest movie ever made about poor white... Southern characters.

A particularly egregious array of Kodak moments.

A swamp of clichés, contrivances, and cheap ham-and-cheese hero sentimentality.

Portman and Judd aren't responsible for the mendacious and finally repulsive sentimentality of Where the Heart Is, but by the end their wholesome glow seemed contaminated by it, and that's a shame.

Banal and trite where it could have been insightful and emotionally truthful, this Fox release is also notable for featuring the first disappointing performance by teen star Natalie Portman.
Read Full Review >Chicago Reader Jonathan Rosenbaum
Moving in fits and starts, mawkish in its sincerity, and at times disjointed in its lumpy structure.

Unfortunately, the strong ensemble cast is not able to hold together this often wayward and meandering story.

Tries to put your tear ducts in a headlock with a litany of catastrophes.

In comparison to Where the Heart Is, the Wal-Mart commercials seem like cinema verite.

Indulges something of a number obsession, amounting not exactly to a movie but rather a tallying of atrocities.

Erica L. gave it a10:
This movie may not be 100% realistic, but it doesn't need to be. the fundamental aspects in this movie ring true in real life. One of my favorite movies.
Amber C. gave it a 10:
I think that this movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. Just the way the characters played it out. They were absolutley perfect. I cry at the end almost every time when I watch it. Especially at the wedding at the end. It was a very sweet movie. I suggest this movie to everyone.
Chezna G. gave it a 10:
I absolutely loved this movie.. if u think this movie is highly unlikely then u need to spend a few years in my hometown in northern Illinois! Every teenage girl there is pregnant in a similar situation.. yes some of the heroic actions made by Forny are far fetched... but it follows the reality of what a young girl in a SMALL town goes though.. The last time i visited my hometown 5 of my once close friends were pregnant or already had kids. I've heard many say the tornado was unlikely.. not if i remember where the movie took place at.. even in northern Illinois having such a tornado isn't impossible. This movie lifted my heart and proved that a young woman CAN do it on her own!
Yoon Min C. gave it a 7:
Conventional plot but the great Natalie Portman never sneers at the inferior material for a second and gives her best. It's nice to see a character being able to grow, learn, develop. Portman's character isn't equipped only with body and heart but with a mind. Good, and the beautiful Naomi Judd makes it even better, but the two guys here are pretty turdy and undeserving of Portman's affections.
Bailey gave it a 10:
I truly loved this movie! being a girl i can realate to this movie. i feel like this is more of a chic flick and maybe thats why the critics didnt like it that much because it wasnt just a movie that anyone would like. but i really enjoyed it and watched it alot and everytime cried. it was very touching :)
Maddie gave it a 9:
I thought this movie was very good at character building. Novalee changed from a foolish young girl to a responsible mother. Even her friend Lexie makes some improvement. All in all I loved this movie so much that the morning after i saw it i got up and watched it again. A wonderful movie!
Mallory C. gave it a 10:
I thought that this movie was amazing. I think that the crtics were wrong when they said it sucked. I found in very good, and I enjoy watching it over and over.
