Movie nominations
Awards season kicked into high gear Monday morning when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 75th annual Golden Globe awards. As always, the group's picks were a mixture of the expected and confounding.
Guillermo del Toro's adult fairy tale The Shape of Water was the biggest honoree among films, leading the year with seven total nominations including best picture (drama). Steven Spielberg's upcoming Pentagon Papers drama The Post was right behind that film with six nominations.
The most surprising best picture nomination was that for The Greatest Showman—which came at the expense of, say, The Big Sick. But, as this year's sole musical to be so honored, Showman at least belonged in its category. (Get Out, on the other hand, seems a bit harder to classify as a comedy or musical, though that is where producers submitted it.)
Other snubs in the best picture category include The Florida Project and Phantom Thread, though it was inevitable that the drama field would have a few snubs, given the lack of a frontrunner and the large number of films that could have been nominated. And the HFPA always picks at least one film in at least one category that most moviegoers have never heard of. This year, that would be upcoming middling rom-com The Leisure Seeker, for which Helen Mirren received a lead actress (comedy or musical) nomination.
Finally, it turns out that those last-minute, Kevin Spacey-deleting reshoots for All the Money in the World paid off, at least in part. Ridley Scott's upcoming film received three nominations, including one for co-star Christopher Plummer, the man who replaced Spacey in this month's reshoots.

TV Shows with Most Golden Globe Nominations
- 2017
On the television side of things, HBO miniseries Big Little Lies followed its 16 Emmy nominations earlier this year with six Golden Globe nominations to lead all TV contenders. The HFPA also shared the TV academy's love for FX's FEUD and Fargo (but not HBO's Veep, which was completely shut out of the Globes after receiving 17 Emmy nominations).
New shows that broke through in a big way were Showtime's new comedy SMILF and Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (plus NBC's revival of Will & Grace). Each of the three received two nominations including one in the best comedy/musical series category, helping to almost completely remake that field—with ABC's Black-ish as the sole returning best comedy nominee.
The best drama series category was much more stable, with four returning nominees and only one newcomer (Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, which replaces HBO's Westworld, which did not air in this year's eligibility period). And HBO was the leading overall network, with 12 total nominations (followed by Netflix with nine and FX with eight).
