Watch a two-minute trailer for the landmark season of ABC's reality singing competition
As American Idol embarks on its landmark 20th season, ABC wants to remind the audience of how far it has come.
A new trailer released for the season that premieres at 8 p.m. on Feb. 27 begins by looking back at past singers turned into superstars by getting their start on the reality singing competition. Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, and of course the inaugural season's winner, Kelly Clarkson, all feature in the trailer, which you can watch below.
It then offers a glimpse at the upcoming new season, which sees the return of Ryan Seacrest as host and Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie as judges. The judges can be seen getting emotional in quite a few auditions, both because of hopeful contestants' personal stories and the power of their vocal abilities.
"It's an opportunity to change your life," Perry reminds in the footage. And this season, some contestants will get that opportunity fast-tracked. Because it is a special milestone season, select auditioners get a pass straight through to the season itself, skipping Hollywood Week.
American Idol first premiered on Fox in June 2022, and it ran on that broadcast network for the first 15 seasons, through 2016. ABC later picked up the series for a March 2018 return, where it has aired ever since. The show currently has a Metascore of 63, with the 20th season not yet made available to critics.
The series is produced by Fremantle and Industrial Media’s 19 Entertainment. Executive producers include showrunner Megan Wolflick; Fremantle’s Jennifer Mullin and Trish Kinane, and 19 Entertainment's Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman. Fremantle distributes the series worldwide.
