The Metascore is a weighted average of scores from top professional critics, on a scale from 0 (bad) to 100 (good). Titles are ranked by Metascore prior to rounding.

While the list above reflects how critics felt about each movie at the time of its release, opinions can change over time. So, to get a better read on the current consensus, we have also aggregated best-of-the-decade lists published by a variety of film and entertainment publications in late 2019. Individual lists are displayed at the bottom of the page, but in the table below, the most frequently mentioned titles are ranked according to our points system (which gives bonus points for being ranked at the top of a list):

  • 3 points for each 1st place ranking
  • 2 points for each 2nd place ranking
  • 1 point for being ranked 3rd - 10th, or for being included on an unranked list of 10 or fewer titles
  • 0.5 points for being included on an unranked list of 11-20 titles
  • No points for films included on unranked lists of more than 20 titles (or for films ranked worse than 20th)

    Blade Runner 2049 was a masterpiece in visuals and story, completely blew my mind that a sequel could be that good.

    here is my list, don't know how many of you will agree

    for honorable mentions i have birdman, the social network and spider man: into the spider verse

    i saw many of you were unsettled because of the acclaim that boyhood had and considered it overrated. i don't completely agree, but everyone has their opinion. either way, you can't argue its originality and the effort and passion put into it. out of all the movies i've seen that try to analyze life, this is the most unique take on the task and the one that handles it the best. moonlight does the very same thing, but undertakes way darker themes, succeeding nevertheless. i have to give the crown to boyhood though, as you literally see the characters grow up on screen over 12 years and live all the important events the family goes through, allowing for a way more immersive experience.

    as some of you may have noticed, i have an affinity for the more serious movies, those who analyze important themes or give a deep psychological analysis to the characters. therefore, i did not make the ranking based on entertainment value or commercial success, but rather on artistic importance, innovation (hence boyhood taking the first place), critical acclaim and sheer quality.

    i also saw that some of you said the lists mentioned movies "that no one's seen." i believe that judgement is completely wrong. a lot of people nowadays "see" movies out of boredom or while hanging out with friends. when they do that, they narrow down their watch list by miles, restricting themselves to specific genres, leaving some movies to be watched by those who seek a different experience, whose number isn't sky high. a movie could be seen by 5 people in total, as long as it's good, it's good. as the title says, these aren't the most commercially successfull movies of the decade, but the ones with the highest quality.

    all of these were my humble opinions. i believe the last decade was extremely great for movies and i hope this one will be as well. if you comment on this list, please do so in a fashionable manner. have a nice day.

    Boyhood is a gimmick. Pathetic to put it as #1. Same as Get out. This list of top 20 films will be forgotten in 50 years time. all in all extreme mediocrity.
