Best-of-the-decade top ten lists

This page will be updated as needed throughout the end of the year.

One problem with TV reviews: For many shows, they only reflect the first few episodes of a given season, which makes it hard to get a sense of a season (or, indeed, series) as a whole after the fact. So, to get a better read on the current consensus and the staying power of each show, we have also aggregated best-of-the-decade lists published by a variety of entertainment publications in late 2019. Individual lists are displayed at the bottom of the page, but in the table below, the most frequently mentioned shows are ranked according to our points system (which gives bonus points for being ranked at the top of a list):

  • 3 points for each 1st place ranking
  • 2 points for each 2nd place ranking
  • 1 point for being ranked 3rd - 10th OR for being included on an unranked list of 10 or fewer TV shows
  • 0.5 points for being included on an unranked list of 11-20 shows OR for being included in any position (1-10) in publications that list comedies and dramas separately (so that those publications don't skew the overall results just by virtue of publishing more than one list)
  • No points for shows included on unranked lists of more than 20 shows (or for shows ranked worse than 20th)

    Fleabag is definitely benefitting from recency bias. The show is great but I mean c'mon, we're talking about 6 hours of TV and it's ranked 2nd on this list. I'd slot it comfortably in the Top 15-20 range. Breaking Bad and Mad Men would be leading this list if some critics didn't take the easy way out and make them ineligible because they premiered before 2010. Also, Rectify should be in the Top 10.

    Hi, guys, just wanted to note a slight error - Twin Peaks: Return was no. 1 on TIME best of decade list, here on Metacritic their list is just presented as a list, without a clear no.1 , but when you click on their full list link it is very clearly stated as their choice for a single best tv show of the decade (when you read it or hear the audio version of the list). Also it is no.1 on Vulture's list of the best tv shows of the decade, which I presume is not featured here because it is the most recent and will surely be featured soon after Xmas, and thus Twin Peaks will be placed accordingly

    It is interesting to see so many agreeing that Fleabag is incredibly overrated. Unfathomable. Same with Atlanta.
    Is it all just white American guilt?

    If you want a show with Donald Glover, put Community! It is so much more intelligent and less arrogant than those two shows!

    I literally can't believe Fleabag is #1 on the lists. Just absolutely wild for me. This show is mediocre at best, and has the combined air time of like 1/2 a season of some of these shows.

    For me:

    1. Better Call Saul -- A more consistent Breaking Bad. Doesn't have the highs Breaking Bad does, but just consistently good in every episode.
    2. Fargo
    3. The Americans
    4. Bojack Horseman
    5. Breaking Bad

    Fleabag at #1? This is like when you go looking for the "best books of all time" on Goodreads and find out that all that Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Hunger Games and Twilight sh*t is in the first positions. Just ridiculous. For christ sake, hoomans, grow up a little.

    2- Hannibal season 2 (superior work of art in all aspects)
    3- Patriot season 1 ( superior work of art in writing)
    Others:
    4- Halt & Catch Fire (script & acting) 5- Better Call Saul / Breaking Bad (script, cinematography & acting) 6- Mad Men (script) 7- Veep (consistently funny) 8- Twin Peaks (only 1 but what a beautiful episode) 9- Community (clever commedia dell'arte) 10 -Leftovers (because of 2 or 3 great episodes) 11- American Crime (profound) 12- Chernobyl

    Note: Community is far better than Parks and Rec.
    Fleabag , BoJack are overrated (far too neurotic and verbose, without any artistic qualities)
